East German elections delayed, with several minor PODs...

So East Germany is no longer communist?

Yep, it's the first democratic election after the end of the SED regime and the round table talks with the opposition. The idea is this: the West German chancellor is Oskar Lafontaine, who is not so keen on a fast reunification, therefore both sides agree on a confederation (like the EC) as the first step before full unification. The elections are not held in March (as in OTL), but two months later, giving the new parties that grew out of the civil rights movements more time to build up their organisation. So the now democratic GDR becomes a "temporary state", with a distinct party system, which has a shakier and more central eastern European outlook than the West German one.

Where are The Republicans?

In 1990, they mainly existed in West Germany and didn't have a sister party in the East. Their potential voters in 1990 are divided between the German Social Union (DSU), which is part of the Alliance for Germany, and the NDP (a former bloc party of the GDR system), or non-voters. But they will eventually turn up at the next election.

From my Shared World Election Game "Send a Message".

Wallace doesn't get shot during the primaries and becomes the running mate for Humphrey in a hastily cobbled together unity "stop-McGovern" ticket.

This the NDP which was set up as a liberal puppet party part of the GDR National Front and not the neo-nazi NPD in the west.(?)

"James Buchanan can at least now hold his head high wherever he is now. He's no longer America's worst president."

"The most hated man in the world."

"In the 21st century, they spoke of Hitler's foul deeds in the 20th. In the 22nd, we will speak of Velasquez's foul deeds in the 21st."

"Behind the facade of smiles, behind the charms, behind it all, laid the blackest of hearts, with no compassion for his victims at all."

"Fascism breathed once more under his dutiful care into a monstrous creature. May it once again rot in its grave."

Those quotes refer to America's 58th president, Jorge Francis Velasquez, a charismatic populist who preyed on the American people's feeling of loss and anger at the ex-American republics. The United States in the 21st century had suffered greatly. A strong plague, the rise of floods, a military coup in its darkest hour leading to states leaving, had made it weaker than it once was.

With the global economy increasing being under Asia's sway as China and India increased their prominence and the disunited North America became an economic backwater, the USA was at a record low. And people were angry at it all. Angry at the system, angry at the traitors, angry at it all.

Due to the Socialist Party being banned by the strongly anti-socialist National Unity Party, the angry voters found only one avenue. And that was the American Party, a nationalistic and expansionist party increasingly becoming fascistic as Jorge Velasquez and his allies grew into influence.

National Unity was the party of the establishment and traditionally the military, but increasingly the military became disillusioned with President Schroeder and became more favorable to the American Party's ideas of "making America great again" via reconquest of lost American land.

In 2088, the people were too angry to re-elect President Schroeder. New York formally declared its independence (having nullified the U.S. government for decades) in early 2088, and Velasquez rode the anger this created to the White House in that year's election.

He moved immediately once he was sworn in. The Union of Southern Republics was under the pro-reunificationist President Fred C. Ayers after longtime President Tom Robertson died in 2086. The "Meeting at Columbia" ensured the USR would once more be American as a "referendum" was held and the USR "voted" (according to its heavily discriminatory voter laws) to return to the United States of America.

This created strong political capital for Velasquez and ensured National Unity, which was hoping to rebound once Velasquez failed to "deliver the goods", would not bounce back. The invasion and occupation of the Republic of Louisiana saw the world take note, but ultimately ignore.

In 2090, a hugely popular President declared war on America's biggest thorn in its side, the Republic of California, and the Cascadian Republic as well.

California, despite preparing for this eventuality, was blindsided and fell within months as its cities were bombed by American planes. The "Silver Rebellion" in Nevada was also crushed by American troops. Cascadia was annexed as the President and the government surrendered.

By then, the world was increasingly concerned about this new belligerent United States. New Jersey was a small independent republic heavily dependent on its neighbours New York and New England. Canada and the European Federation decided to guarantee its independence.

The week after the hugely successful midterms where National Unity was reduced to double-digits in the House and the 20s in the Senate, Velasquez declared that America was to reclaim New Jersey. "Operation Lawnmower", as the invasion strategy was dubbed, went ahead in late November.

As widely expected, New York and New England decided to jump to New Jersey's defense, while Canada decided to bide its time. The European Federation started to send military equipment to Canada, New England and New York, which helped them significantly.

The invasion of New York started in early 2091, but was slowed down drastically by the rise of rebellions in America, especially in California and the South. The long-underground Socialist resistance was emerging and making life harder for Velasquez.

His hate of the transhuman minority in the United States was fierce and even as the enemies came closer and closer, he kept funding the "Population Eradication" that would ensure "the purity of the human race is not soiled by those subhumans".

In the end, after a landslide re-election in 2092 due to several strong victories against New York and the rebels, the tide turned quickly.

The rebellions grew and grew as the people became more sick of Velasquez's regime. Europe decided to throw its hat in despite its financial woes and China was glancing unfavorably at America. The liberation of New Jersey in mid-December was the first of many blows.

The Americans retreated from Albany, where they were for a few months, and was eventually rooted out of New York City.

California was now under the control of the rebels and President Maria Durantez and the government-in-exile returned. Cascadia once more declared itself free under a new President who was leading the Cascadian Resistance.

Texas, a state with a strong U.S. military presence but a slightly-defiant state government who was careful not to rise Velasquez's ire, declared independence as the Republic of Texas in mid-2093, opening up another front for the Allies to use since it immediately allied with them.

China finally sent troops to aid California and Canada, after years sitting on the fence, declared war, creating a new northern front.

With the South increasingly under the control of revolutionary socialists and Texas independent, the approaching Northeastern (+EF) forces, California and Cascadia (and China) sending troops to push into America, and now this new northern front, Velasquez's days was numbered.

The American Party-controlled Supreme Court suspended elections for the duration of the war and approved the moving of the capital to Lincoln, Nebraska.

Vice President Nicholas Winters, a native of Nebraska, nevertheless refused to abandon the District of Columbia. He resigned his post and surrendered when Alliance troops reached D.C. He was later executed in the Bismarck Trials, along with the majority of Velasquez's surviving government.

The discovery of the concentration camps in the Midwest where transhuman people were forced to labor until they died from starvation, shocked and angered the world and hardened their determination to bring down the United States and its evil administration.

It was early 2095, and President Velasquez was in a deep depression in his bunker under Lincoln, and despite pleas to appoint a new Vice President, refused to do so. He proclaimed "If I die, Teofila takes over. That's the law in our United States. I don't need a Vice President." He was referring to his Secretary of State, Teofila A. Nathan, who was en route from now occupied Chicago to the bunker when she was captured by Alliance forces.

Upon hearing of this, Velasquez lost all hope, and prepared his suicide. His long-time wife Luciana swallowed a cyanide pill and died as he watched.

He took out his trusty revolver, an archaic weapon, but one he trusted, unlike the now standard laser weapons. He put a bullet in it, the first and only bullet he ever acquired. His surviving cabinet broke down the door, and saw their President stare at them before firing the bullet.

Thus ended the life of Jorge Francis Velasquez, America's 58th president, and universally agreed, its' worst.

21st-century American dictators aren't a wholly original concept, but I don't think I've seen a Latino one before.

EDIT: Or a transgender one, for that matter.

You found it. :D

Decided to make it only appear in the wikibox, because his transition started fairly early and by that time, it isn't that big a deal. He's still the first (and only) transgender president, though. Hardly an achievement, though, kind of like James Buchanan being the first gay president (according to some people).

I have to say, for an insurgent right-wing populist movement in America, these people seem to be surprisingly accepting.
The plague that killed 1/5 of America's population and the somewhat-universal anger at the "treasonous" states, plus the slow march of time, changes a lot of stuff.

However, it was not easy for him to take complete control of the American Party. His charisma and his political skills ensured he did so.

And I have to make it clear, this timeline never was 100% realistic. More like a good story than a plausible timeline, TBH.

In fairness, could you imagine a woman being high-up in a far-right movement like the Tea Party 50-100 years ago? Or leading something like the French National Front in the 50s? Everything changes, I don't see it as that much of a sticking point that Transgender Rights could move so far in this century that a Reactionary movement wouldn't be bothered about it.

I actually quite like TB's scenario; it's a lot more interesting and original than most attempts at an American Dictatorship.

This was what I was going with, actually. It's 70 years after all. A lot of shit happened between now and there.
