Alternate Weapons of War thread...

And another one; this time of a somewhat British character. An officer of the Third Heavy Brigade, perhaps, the one with the famous 'Nauseamus Igitur' parole?

I know this thread is about machines and not about alternate cavalry, but oh well... I found three more of these old paintings: a German one, an American one, but of a later period, and and an old fart of an officer who might be French. Should I post them?

Giant woodlice are weapons of war in my book!

Angriffsgruppe

All right, here is Manfred, Freiherr von Stalhein, in his guise as "Befehlhaber des vierten Regiments '1666' der Skorpionsangriffs- und Erweiteringsgruppe". Prussian, obviously, and yes, he was Erich's ancestor.

This was the poorest one of the lot. It was discoloured badly and I only cleaned it up partly. The remaining two are better.

This is a tank I've been working on in Inkscape. It's no where near finished yet, hence all the overlapping lines, but it's definitely taking shape.

It's a Pankt Pahngan - 0441, a tank destroyer designed and built by the Danab Armour Enterprise (a semi-autonomous government-funded firm) for the armed forces of the People's Dual-Presidential Republic, an interplanetary, federal nation with which humanity is associated.

It's large enough to carry the crew and an extra four personnel in the back. The extra four soldiers are usually divided into two groups of two. The first group is armed with man-portable anti-tank missile launchers, in order to assist the PP-0441 with its attacks, and the second group is armed with anti-infantry weapons, in order to defend the PP-0441 from infantry attacks.

What do you guys think of it so far?

"They call it the Panzerkampfwagen III. In compairison with the description you gave us, it seems to be bigger and the shape is clearly different, with the glacis plate and turret front being sloped, but they've kept the engine at the rear and the front machine-gunner next to the driver."
-The Foresight War pg. 55

PzKpfw III 25-30 ton battle tank with 50mm L/60 gun (75mm L/45 in later versions) similar to the historical Panzer III but with thicker sloped armor and introduced instead of the historical Panzer III and IV.
-The Foresight War pg. 315

My attempt at the Panzer III as described in The Foresight War

Beautiful! May I adopt them as the alternate *Panther tanks that will enter action in late 1942 in my No Spanish Civil War Timeline?

However, unlike OTL, by late 1941 german tanks are already outfitted with larger guns and slightly better armor that would not be operative in OTL until 1942; while german engineers are already developing what will be called the Panzer V medium tank, which is called like OTL’s Panzer V Panther, but is not like OTL’s Panzer V Panther, which was designed as a response to the russian T-34’s that the germans still have not met. TTL’s Panzer V will be ready for combat in the autumn of 1942 (almost a year in advance towards his OTL counterpart), and is not as powerful. The gun is smaller, the armour is not as thick and is not sloped, making its profile bulkier and easier to spot for the enemy, so it looks like a smaller Tiger.

They're created as a reaction to the spanish Prim tanks, whose main features are the sloped armour and a big huge gun, so it kind of makes sense.

Strangelove if you want to use the image in your TL my only request would be to just give me credit for doing the image. FYI the tank design and idea are from the novel The Foresight War, the author of which is on the board if I remember correctly.

Very nice, gtrof!

Thanks Readman, I'm thinking about doing the alternate Panzer IV 'Panther' from the novel too.

Yup. Tony Williams.

I really need to buy Foresight War... I've just read the free portion on Tony's site :p

Oooh! Should be interesting... though I don't see the point of them producing, essentially, a smaller Tiger. I guess it gets explained in the novel.

Its basically an improved Panther, sloped armor, and 88mm gun. A question I have is would it have the same suspension as the original Panther or go for something else?

"The new 45 ton Panzer IV Ausf.B 'Panther', armed with a high velocity 88mm L/71 gun, was a formidable opponent..."
-The Foresight War pg. 266

Pzkpfw IV (Panther) 40-45 ton battle tank armed with 88mm L/56 gun; Ausf.B with 88mm L/71 and additional armor.

I think Darkaiz is still a lot better than gtrof.

I'd think darkaiz would win a ship building contest. The few ships I've done aren't equal to his. BTW darkaiz they are very well done :)

Also I do use GIMP to do a few things, mainly camo and adding dirt, text.

Crusader from The Foresight War

“We’ll start with this one.” The tarpaulin was pulled away, revealing a low squat tank, the sloping armor giving it a streamedlined look. “This is the Crusader. Eighteen tons, with two inches of armor on the turret and the frontal plate, one inch elsewhere. Engine at the front, beside the driver-a three hundred horsepower six-cylinder in-line unit; half a Rolls-Royce Merlin actually. This leaves the rear half of the vehicle clear for the fighting compartment, in this case with a three-man turret mounting a two-pounder gun firing ammunition compatible with the Bofors 40mm AA gun…”
-The Foresight War pg. 30-31

18-20 ton four-man tank and the basis for a range of other armored fighting vehicles. MK I with 2 pdr gun, MK II with 6 pdr, MK III with 14 pdr. The different models also feature additional armor.
-The Foresight War pg. 301

My illustration of the British Crusader tank, from the novel The Foresight War. The three models based on areas they get used in the book. Soviet MK III has a Dshk MG instead of a Browing HMG.
