You haven't been reading Dale Brown, by any chance?

No. I dont even know who that man is...

B-52 IS bigger, has greater RCS, more expencive and so on...
OK.

But.
First, it can fly from Ascension to Falklands and back with shitload of bombs allmost without refueling.
It can fulfill about 4-6 other roles ( excellent for MPA, AEWAC, ASTOR, ELINT, EW, not so good but it can due for tanker/transport ).

Second, after about 1960.-1970. no airplane can come over the defended target and hit bombs without heawy losses.
So, what remains?
Cruise missiles.
B-52 can carry between 12 and 20 of them.
So, you can launch them from great enough distance, and go back, without refueling, allmost anywhere on the world.

So, you have aircraft that actually CAN make the business done, how many money is that worth?

And, if you are implying that AVRO/brtish aerospace industry can not make B-52 by US plans, or can not design B-52-like aircraft on its own, than, my gentlemens, let's close UK-aerospace industry because they are worth for crap then, and order B-52 from USA.

;)

This Dale Brown.

British engines wouldn't be so much better than US ones. B-52's never have been reengined for 4 engines after all these years. Which brings up a good question, why stay with the 8 engine design? There must be pratical reasons for doing so. 4 less engines would mean less maintenance, for one advantage.
The rumor has it, that it's the frontal radar cross section of the turbofans offered as replacements for the Turbojets, by Boeing that has been the sticking point over this issue...
Alternatively, the engines are'nt Pratt & Whitney...
(The 2 failed proposals for re-engining submitted to the U.S Airforce, by Boeing, used Rolls-Royce RB211's and the military version of the CF6 (F-108), currently used by the U.S Airforce on the C-5B & C-5M Galaxy, manafactured by General Electric, respectively...)

Look, I dont know about that, but the fact is that B-52 can be a VERY useful aircraft, just because it can pretty good fulfill about 8-9 roles.

And it has enormous range.
;)

I'm not arguing. You just left out HALO missions, poly-morphic trans-configurational UCAV command missions and a few others.
