Alternate Treaty of Paris 1783

POD 1779 Successful Penobscot Expedition Continental Navy captures Bermuda, Bahamas

1780 Luis de Córdova y Córdova successfully interdicts British shipping to Gibraltar which surrenders.

1781 Decisive British Victory at the Battle of Negapatam leads to capture of Dutch East Indies.

1782 After successfully avoiding battle with the Royal Navy the combined Franco-Spanish Armada conquers Jamaica.

Treaty of Paris 1783

OTL American boundaries but addition of Bahamas, Bermuda and Sunbury County(OTL New Brunswick). All British West Indian possessions held by France since 1778 unless held before 1763 are ceded to the United States(clause;the United States may not renounce sovereignty, or by treaty sell said territories) Britain and US sign commercial treaty.

Spain gains West Florida, Mosquito Coast, British Honduras Minorca and Gibraltar.

France regains territory around the Senegal River and East Indian interests and all French West Indian possessions held before 1763

Britain gains Ceylon, Dutch East indies.

Okay so what effects of such a treaty? Britain still holds Canada, Nova Scotia, and East Florida but now also has the rich East Indies at the cost of its west Indian possessions. Does this strengthen the British empire in the long-term? What are the effects of Britain losing Gibraltar?

Discuss

Any thoughts please.

I think France gaining anything in India is out, as they are so severely outmatched in that theatre that capturing, let alone holding, the territory is going to be near-impossible. Britain losing Jamaica is a no-no as well.

France still goes revolutionary, the treasury's still bankrupt, the sugar islands won't help much, perhaps delay things for a few years, but are not sufficient to stop them.

Gibraltar is an interesting case, there are some in power who would gladly trade Gibraltar for East Florida, and some cash, others who wouldn't touch it with a barge pole, and still others who would prefer to keep Minorca. Depends on who's in charge, but this is just about possible.

As for long term effects, Britain recaptures the Sugar Islands during the *French Revolutionary Wars, possibly regains Bahamas and certainly Bermuda if a *War of 1812 takes place. Netherlands lose Cape and almost certainly 'Major Power' Status during the wars if a *Batavian Republic is created. With base in East Florida, *War of 1812 would be more interesting, Savannah, Georgia could be easily captured, and a southern front could lead to more British successes in the North.

Britain controlling the whole of the East Indies (and by this point dominance over Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific is near inevitable) could have some very interesting effects over the colonisation of Africa.

1781 Decisive British Victory at the Battle of Negapatam leads to capture of Dutch East Indies.
The problem with this is that an even more decisive British victory at Negapatam would lead to British Indonesia insomuch as a decisive French sea victory at Trincomalee in August 1782 would lead to French India. Actually, this analogy is even less apt because Negapatam was fought off the city of the same name, in OTL Tamil Nadu: far, far away from the Dutch East Indies. On the other hand, had things gone better for Suffren I could see him re-establishing French power in at least part of India.
You'd need another POD to get British Indonesia. Best case after Negapatam would be British occupation and possible annexation of Trincomalee, but I doubt that the British would want to antagonize the Dutch with a seizure of all of Sri Lanka.
