This probably isnt common knowledge, but in the third crusade Ricahard I and Salah al-Din actually considered as a peace arrangement to marry Richards sister Joanna of Sicily and Saladins brother Al-Adil to each other and allow them to rule Jerusalam. I've been writing a book about this with a few changes, and i wanted some outside opinions. I changed several things including keeping Raymond III alive long enough to see the third crusade, and marrying Joan to one of Saladins sons instead of his brother. Further, while it is was looked upon badly to marry out of religion the Koran has never spoken against it and even allows it to Christians or Judiasts as long as the man is Muslim. Ive done a large, large amount of research and plenty of sources supporting the idea that if it had been pushed just a bit more that a marriage could have been possible.

The time line(as far as i willing to reveal) would go like this.

Sept. 7 1191- the battle of Arsuf

Sept. 10 1191- Richard reaches and takes Jaffa

Mid Oct. 1191- Richard proposes Al-Adil Saladins brother marry his sister Joan and the whole of Jerusalam be there wedding gift. Joan refuses to marry Al-Adil and he refuses to marry Richards young niece Eleanor of Brittany. Al-Malik Faeth(the only fictional character in my story) steps forward in Al-Adils place much to the distress of his father who is unsure if he can trust Richard. Meanwhile Richard has written the Pope for permission to marry Joan or for an army to occupy the HolyLand so that he may return to his kingdom. He is refused both, so in outrage (of pretty much being abandoned by all his allies, Phillip, Celestine and Conrad) he marries her anyway.

This is where the fun begins.....

Both Joan and Faeth refuse to convert, and Saladin attempting to hold the peace together in both his empire and Palestine supports this action by eliminating all taxes on non-muslims in the HolyLand before handing over his territories in Palestine to his son. Richard after leaving a generous dowry of gold, troops and lands including Cyprus prepares to go home to England.

Al-Malik Faeth is the half slave mamuluk child of Saladin. The mamluks/mamuluks were a caste of slaves raised from childhood to be loyal servant and warriors in their emirs or sultans army. They were mostly Turkish and Slavic in the begining but included Africans, Asians and Italians. These armies were useful because they had no other loyalties but to their masters and few if any to the state. To increase their loyalty some were given rank as high as emir in the armies. I figure someone as smart as Saladin would figure he could have a mamluk son and raise him to lead his own personal guard of 5000 mamluks. They would fiercely loyal to their prince or emir and he would in return be loyal to Saladin.
