Virginia, Nova Scotia, Carolina, Georgia . . . the historical evidence suggests that English/British monarchs had no objection to giving their colonies Latin names. I don't think Protestants necessarily hated the Latin language. They replaced it in church services so that the laity could better understand them, but they still recognized that it was the major language of learning in Europe. John Calvin first wrote Institution of the Christian Religion in Latin, for example.
