Anything could be named after the Founding Fathers (Washington, Jefferson, Madison, etc.).
The Columbia river might conceivably be called something completely different; an American guy had a ship named Columbia when he found it, and named the river after the ship. So, if it's the Novaya Don (say), then a state near it might be the Novaya Don.
Like any state near the Mississippi possibly being called Mississippi, any state in the Louisiana Purchase could be Louisiana.
Michigan could coceivably be called Huron, with a different state of Michigan in, say, southern Wisconsin and northern Illinois.
