Osk -- LeBron James, Redeemer of the Clippers; 2017 NBA Draft
  • I meant to add content to this shortly after starting the thread, but alas... Here is a list to start off from a setting that deviates from OTL at the start of the 2007-08 NBA Season. I've been tracking and somewhat overseeing this "TL" by way of a 2K20 MyLeague campaign and will probably add more lists from that TL here.

    Footnotes
[1] It is rumored that Kobe Bryant, who has announced this upcoming season would be his last (giving him an NBA record 22 seasons), played a major role in the Lakers selection of Jayson Tatum (SF). Bryant spoke highly of Tatum following his selection by the team.

[2] Lauri Markkanen (PF) had been heavily scouted by the Rockets, who signed the phenom known as Kevin Durant (SF) in free agency a few years back but have failed to make a contender around him. With staff shake ups this summer, the Rockets liked Markkanen's size and shooting ability. All that being said, some have questioned the selection of the power forward over other available talents, including the crafty guard Donovan Mitchell.

[3] The San Antonio Spurs originally had this pick before agreeing to a trade with the Charlotte Hornets. In exchange for the 3rd Pick (2019), San Antonio's 1st Round Pick in 2019 (Top 10 Protected), and two 2nd Round Picks (2018 & 2019), the Spurs received from the Hornets a 2nd Round Pick (2018), the Italian Senso Rancati (SF) who went 70th in the 2016 Draft, the Hornets 26th Pick in this draft, and, most importantly, the 27 year old shooting guard James Harden.

[4] The Celtics are poised to make this the final year of their rebuilding efforts following the disintegration of their "Big Three" era. In the past few years they have drafted the likes of Kristaps Porzingis (PF) and Joel Embiid (C), both of whom have been standout stars (Porzingis won Rookie of the Year for the 2015-16 season to boot). They hope to solidify this young roster with Donovan Mitchell (SG) and ideally ride the youthful roster to success before Deron Williams' (PG) career is truly over.

[5] After the Spurs-Hornets blockbuster trade during draft night, where in the Hornets received the 3rd Pick in exchange for offensive phenom James Harden (SG), yet another blockbuster trade happened two picks later when the Austin Wranglers send the 5th Pick in this draft, their 1st Round Pick in 2018 (Unprotected) and their 1st Round Pick in 2031 (Unprotected) and a 2nd Round Pick (2021) to the Portland Trail Blazers for none other than Stephen Curry (PG), along with DeAndre Bembry (SF) and a 1st Round Pick (2021). This move was completely out of left field with Curry being a fan favorite in Portland. In Curry the Wranglers get an NBA Championship (2011 as part of the Chicago Bulls) and the league's best 3PT shooter of all time. Fans were quick to react on social media, with Wranglers fans expressing mixed reactions considering the three first round picks lost, while Trail Blazers fans flooded Twitter with the hashtag #FireMarcus (Don Marcus was POR's GM at the time); many mocked the selection of John Collins with the pick. Stephen A. Smith famously tore apart the Warriors decision-making the morning after Draft Night on ESPN's First Take, saying "John Collins for STEPHEN WARDELL CURRY? HELL. No. HEEEEEELLLLL NO. Hey Don Marcus, I have one message for you - STAY OFF THE WEED." Portland's gamble is that the Wranglers will fail to gain traction in the next two seasons and their gained picks will translate to future stars.

[6] Bam Adebayo (C) would be traded to the Dallas Mavericks in exchange for veteran forward Jared Dudley (SF/PF), the 40th Pick in the draft and an unprotected 1st Round Pick (2018).

    [7] The New York Knicks

[8] In OTL, Guduric went undrafted, however, due to the butterflies he is more known and a seemingly better player in TL, playing the small forward position more often than the shooting guard position. Miami nabs him at 11th.

[9] Markelle Fultz was, at one point, considered the top prospect coming out of this draft. Even going into draft day, it was expected he would finish in the top five, with some believing the Lakers would take the guard even with their current starting point Goran Dragic. Fultz ended up slipping down the cracks on draft night, however, falling to the Cavaliers with the 11th pick, and some think he may be the steal of the draft. He'll play alongside Cavaliers stars DeMar DeRozan and Paul George.

[10] Sterling Brown was later traded to the Dallas Mavericks in exchange for the 40th Pick and a future 2nd Round Pick (2018).

[11] Most pundits placed Becker as a First Round selection, with some reputable mock drafts having him well within the lottery - SportsAnalytics2000 had Becker as high as the 2nd Pick for the Rockets in their final mock draft; NBA.com put Becker at 9th to the Grizzlies in theirs. But the first round came and went and Becker remained on the board, leading to his late selection in the 2nd Round by a Lakers franchise that may have gotten very lucky that he wasn't picked up sooner.

[12] Justin Patton suffers the largest slide of any OTL player to still be picked up in this TL's 2017 draft, dropping from being the OTL 16th Pick to TL's 63rd Pick.

Unknown -- Barry Sanders, the Best Running Back Texas Ever Saw
  • Here's my first alternate sports list, with two PoDs: (1) Barry Sanders stays for his senior season (the 1989 football season) at Oklahoma State and (2) the University of Miami Hurricanes win the Catholics vs. Convicts matchup in 1988, leading to Miami winning the college NC and to their quarterback, Steve Walsh getting drafted by, oh, Detroit in the second round. With no Steve Walsh available in the supplemental draft, this means that the Cowboys are still eligible to get the #1 pick in 1990, and they pick Sanders. So, here's a list of Super Bowl winners ITTL:

Super Bowl XXV: Buffalo Bills (1) beat the New York Giants
Super Bowl XXVI: Washington Redskins (2) beat the Buffalo Bills
Super Bowl XXVII: Dallas Cowboys (3) beat the Houston Oilers
Super Bowl XXVIII: Dallas Cowboys (4) beat the Kansas City Chiefs
Super Bowl XXIX: Dallas Cowboys (5) beat the Pittsburgh Steelers
Super Bowl XXX: Dallas Cowboys (6) beat the Indianapolis Colts
Super Bowl XXXI: Dallas Cowboys (7) beat the Jacksonville Jaguars
Super Bowl XXXII: Denver Broncos (1) beat the Dallas Cowboys
Super Bowl XXXIII: Denver Broncos (2) beat the Minnesota Vikings
Super Bowl XXXIV: Jacksonville Jaguars (1) beat the Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Super Bowl XXXV: Oakland Raiders (3) beat the Minnesota Vikings
Super Bowl XXXVI: Jacksonville Jaguars (2) beat the New Orleans Saints
Super Bowl XXXVII: New Orleans Saints (1) beat the Jacksonville Jaguars
Super Bowl XXXVIII: New Orleans Saints (2) beat the Oakland Raiders
Super Bowl XXXIX: San Diego Chargers (1) beat the New Orleans Saints
Super Bowl XL: New Orleans Saints (3) beat the Pittsburgh Steelers
Super Bowl XLI: New Orleans Saints (4) beat the Indianapolis Colts
Super Bowl XLII: New Orleans Saints (5) beat the Oakland Raiders
Super Bowl XLIII: Pittsburgh Steelers (5) beat the New Orleans Saints
Super Bowl XLIV: Green Bay Packers (3) beat the Pittsburgh Steelers
Super Bowl XLV: San Diego Chargers (2) beat the St. Louis Rams
Super Bowl XLVI: Dallas Cowboys (8) beat the Denver Broncos
Super Bowl XLVII: New Orleans Saints (6) beat the Pittsburgh Steelers
Super Bowl XLVIII: New Orleans Saints (7) beat the New England Patriots
Super Bowl XLIX: New England Patriots (1) beat the New Orleans Saints
Super Bowl L: New England Patriots (2) beat the Dallas Cowboys
Super Bowl LI: San Diego Chargers (3) beat the Minnesota Vikings
Super Bowl LII: Pittsburgh Steelers (6) beat the Dallas Cowboys
Super Bowl LIII: Chicago Bears (2) beat the Pittsburgh Steelers
Super Bowl LIV: San Francisco 49ers (5) beat the Tennessee Titans (Note: there is no Covid-19 ITTL--since the PoD is in 1990, it makes sense that it would be butterflied away)

    Footnotes
[1] Trae Young had come to be seen as the expected first overall pick after the Foresters got the first pick in the draft. Media pundits and league insiders agreed that the best move for the Foresters would be to pair Giannis with a guard of the future and ultimately the organization agreed. Young is expected to be a good complementary player to Antetokounmpo, but after the draft many argued he wasn't the best player in the draft That remains to be seen.

[2] MPJ was originally considered the top prospect in this draft class, but with Vancouver more than capable at the forward position, he fell to the Boston Celtics. This marks the fourth high profile lottery selection in five years for the Boston Celtics, who have drafted since 2014: Joel Embiid (8th in 2014); Kristaps Porzingis (2nd in 2015); Donovan Mitchell (4th in 2017), and now MPJ. Even if the Celtics fail to get Embiid to return this off-season, they will have crafted one of the most talented cores in the league.

[3] Many people, especially his European fans, believe Luka Doncic should have been the consensus first pick in the draft. The young Euroleague champion from Serbia is expected to be a phenomenal player, but concerns about transitioning from Europe to the NBA mean he fell to third. The Hornets are hoping his fans, the ones who think he is a transcendent player, are right.

[4] Kobe retired at the conclusion of the 2017-18 season marking an NBA record 22 seasons played, entirely with the Los Angeles Lakers. The franchise failed to make the playoffs and is now fully in post-Kobe mode. This is their second top 5 pick in two years (the Lakers had the first overall pick in 2017). They chose power forward Jaren Jackson Jr. with the 4th pick to compliment Jayson Tatum (SF) and Tyler Ellis Jr. (C).

[5] The Aces take a gamble with Marcel Sonnet, another star from Europe, who has even more skeptics than Luka does. The Aces selection of Sonnet was mildly unexpected, but the frenchman is a sharpshooting guard with experience playing against professionals - he may very well prove the skeptics wrong.

[6] This pick was originally the Pistons pick until landing in the hands of the Phantoms. The Phantoms were not uberly impressed with the players of this draft, so when the 76ers approached with a trade proposal centered on swapping the pick for Louis Williams, they had to accept. Williams had cemented himself as a high tier scorer in the league and pairing him with Kevin Durant could take Baltimore to the next level. The 76ers went on to use the pick to draft Marvin Bagley III.

[7] For a while, DeAndre Ayton was thought to be a lock for a top 3 pick. Six teams didn't bite and he fell to seventh and the Washington Wizards, who hope he will complement their core of Damian Lillard and DeMar DeRozan (who missed most of last season).

[8] Many believe Grayson Allen should have been selected higher in the draft, but there are considerable concerns about his temperament, maturity and professionalism.

    More Than A Feeling -- The NBA c. 2035
  • I did a 15 year Basketball GM sim of the future of the NBA. Here are some highlights
KAT is still playing at 40 in Miami(He left Minnesota for Brooklyn in 2025)
Luka is the GOAT. 5 Rings and 7 MVPs(He plays in Dallas his whole career. Jalen Brunson is also still there along with auto generated player Kyle Howard and aging Jayson Tatum.)
Giannis and Middleton win 2 rings in Milwaukee(They both are still there in their 40s)
Trae Young teamed up with Ja Morant in Memphis and won a ring(Trae is now in Sacramento and Ja is in Detroit)
New Orleans with Zion never made it past the second round. Zion then went to New York where he won a ring
Deni Avdija and some autogens won the 2031 championship in Orlando
Cole Anthony is a bust and plays his last season at 31
Rudy Gobert tears his ACL in 2021 and falls out of the league in 2023
The big 3 of Lob City retire the same year
    Lebron plays to 44

    - OTL: TBD

    * at the time of Rose's MVP, the New Orleans Pelicans were known as the New Orleans Hornets.

[1a] Tim Duncan secures his third MVP (2002, 2003 & 2008) after leading the defending champion Spurs to the top seed in the Western Conference. He would go on to be named Finals MVP later in the post season after the Spurs repeat and nab their fifth championship. This would be the second time in his career that Duncan would win both MVP and Finals MVP in the same season.

[1b] Unfortunately for Kobe Bryant, the OTL 2008 MVP, he fails to win the award throughout the remainder of his career in this TL.

[2] Like OTL, LeBron James secures his first MVP following the 2008-09 season. Unlike OTL, he does so as a Los Angeles Clippers, the result of a giant trade between the two teams involving draft picks, other teams, and a public fallout between James and the Cavaliers. Cleveland's loss of LeBron is considered one of the biggest failures in sports history. The maneuverings that brought LeBron to the Clippers also brought Chris Paul to the team. Both players were incredibly criticized for their public roles in getting traded from their respective franchises, and new Clippers owner Steve Ballmer (just go with it) was also criticized for his own role. Nonetheless, LeBron led the Clippers to the best record in the NBA and won his first MVP.

[3] Dwight Howard wins his first and only career MVP award in a season where he dominated the league. Howard also won the DPOY award during this season and then became Finals MVP after leading the Magic in a grueling, seven-game series against the Portland Trailblazers. He joins Hakeem Olajuwon as the only players in NBA history win MVP, DPOY and Finals MVP in the same season.

[4] After losing Chris Paul during the fiasco ridden 2007-08 season, the New Orleans Hornets (now known as the Pelicans) were able to get the first overall pick in the 2008 draft and with it they chose a new point guard to lead their team. Just three seasons into his career, Derrick Rose has made it clear New Orleans made the right decision when they chose him to be their new face. After becoming an All-Star in his sophomore campaign, Rose followed it up by taking the MVP award in 2010-11, becoming the youngest player in NBA history to win the award.

[5] LeBron James, who many felt was the true MVP of the 2010-11 season, went on a three-year run as league MVP, winning the award in 2012, 2013 and 2014. He joins Bill Russell, Wilt Chamberlain and Larry Bird as the only players to win the award three times in a row. He joins Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (6 MVPs), Bill Russell (5 MVPs), Michael Jordan (5 MVPs) and Wilt Chamberlain (4 MVPs) as the only players with at least four MVP seasons. In each of these three seasons (2011-12, 2012-13, 2013-14) LeBron also won Finals MVP. This run cemented LeBron's place in NBA lore as one of, if not the greatest player of all time.

[6] Carmelo Anthony secured his first and only MVP of his career for the 2014-15 NBA season, controversially breaking LeBron James streak. Anthony had a stellar season as he led a revitalized New York team to the first seed in the Eastern Conference behind 27.2 PPG, 6.3 RPG, 4.9 APG, 1.2 SPG and 1.0 BPG. Yet, some felt LeBron should have won the award and only lost it because of fatigue from voters. LeBron had just come off his third consecutive championship and led the Clippers once again to the best record in the NBA in 2014-15, and the case could be made even as he had his second lowest scoring season of his career that year (21.3 PPG). Nonetheless, LeBron James publicly shared his support for his close friend, Anthony, and when asked after the announcement was made stated "Carmelo deserves it - he was the best player on the best team in the East. He's an all-time great. He deserves it."

[7] After his scoring dropped to 21.3 PPG for the 2014-15 season, LeBron James would go on to average 28.2 PPG over the next two seasons as he led the Clippers to the fifth championship in a row (2012-16) and seventh Finals appearance in a row. Voters didn't reject "the King" like they had in 2014-15, especially as LeBron's game somehow got better and the result was two more MVP selections for the kid from Akron, Ohio. With his sixth MVP in 2016-17, LeBron James tied Kareem Abdul-Jabbar for most MVPs in NBA history, surpassing Michael Jordan. By this point in his career, with 6 MVPs, 6 Finals MVPs, and 6 Championships, LeBron James is considered the best player of all time by many.

[8] Russell Westbrook wins his first MVP in a season where multiple players shot the lights out - so much so that Westbrook's 24.7 PPG showing seems pedestrian. But the athletic phenom, fresh off winning a championship, produced one of his best NBA seasons to date. Of particular note were Westbrook's statistical achievements, he notched an impressive 20 triple doubles during the season, joining Wilt Chamberlain and Oscar Robertson as the only players in NBA history to record at least 20 TDs in a season. With Carmelo in the latter stages of his career, Westbrook has taken a stronger role on the team. On top of his statistical feats, the Knicks also finished first in the Eastern Conference. LeBron James (SF-LAC) and Kevin Durant (SF-BAL) finished second and third respectively in the MVP balloting.

[9] In this season, Russell Westbrook on led the Knicks to the best record in the East, but did it with even better statistical numbers than the year before. In 2018-19, Westbrook became the second player in NBA history to average a triple double for the season. This remarkable accomplishment propelled the guard to his second straight MVP award, although Orlando forward Anthony Costner made a good case after leading the Magic to 3rd in the East behind 36.4 PPG. Westbrook had a total of 33 triple doubles for the season.

[10] In control of his own destiny for the first time in a few years, Stephen Curry left Austin in free agency and went to ... Atlanta. The Hawks had been trying to break through for years behind franchise player Blake Griffin, but hadn't been able to make the jump. However, the organization and Curry saw what was possible. The team-up led the Hawks to the top seed in the Eastern Conference as Curry and Griffin became one of the premier duos in the NBA. That giant leap gave Curry, who has finished in the top 5 in MVP votes before, what he needed to take the prize. Curry averaged 26.3 PPG, 3.9 RPG, a career-best 9.6 APG, while shooting +52% from the field, including +47% from three.

CharlestownChiefsESC -- NHL Keeps Pre-1929 Playoff Format
  • Here's one for me mine is if the NHL kept the format they had been using prior to 1929. This means that the 2 division winners get 1st round byes. Number 2 nad 3 seeds play each other. The winners play the division winners and the winners of that series play for the cup. In this I used what if sports, From 1929 to 1937 the play in round was a 2 goal aggregate series. The Division finals were best of 3, and the Stanley Cup was Best of 5. From 1937 -1938 the play in was a best of 3 while he division finals and finals were best of 5. Here's the cup winners below, The Montreal Maroons have a dynasty here. I have more detailed breakdowns if you want. LMK

meries -- Alternate NFL-AFL Merger; Super Bowl V through X
  • Many years ago, I came up with an Alternate 1970 NFL-AFL Merger idea and went way into it by creating schedules for each team as well as a year-to-year schedule rotation. It was really easy to do during through the 1970-1975 seasons due to the 14 game schedule, but once Tampa Bay and Seattle entered the league and the schedule went to 16 games creating the schedules became three-dimensional chess hard so the idea essentially dead unless I can figure it out.

The main change was the switch of the Atlanta Falcons, Minnesota Vikings, and New Orleans Saints going to the AFC instead of the Baltimore Colts, Cleveland Browns, and Pittsburgh Steelers; as well as making the NFC Divisions being better geographically (Dallas and St. Louis go to the West). Other changes were ties were counted during these years when in OTL they weren't, plus playoff seeding and home field were based on records not predetermined seedings like OTL.

Every game was run through What If Sports simulation engine.

Here are the Super Bowl results
Super Bowl V Detroit Lions (NFC) 23-19 Cincinnati (AFC)
Super Bowl VI Washington Redskins (NFC) 15-14 Cincinnati (AFC) *The Redskins did not lose a game, but had one tie*
Super Bowl VII Miami Dolphins (AFC) 30-15 Pittsburgh (NFC) *Still 17-0, couldn't believe that happened*
Super Bowl VIII Miami Dolphins (AFC) 24-7 Los Angeles (NFC)
Super Bowl IX Washington Redskins (NFC) 13-3 Denver (AFC)
Super Bowl X Pittsburgh Steelers (NFC) 36-13 Houston (AFC)

    Footnotes
⓵ The reigning champion Milwaukee Hawks ditch Milwaukee for St. Louis, the third move in the franchise's history.
⓶ Wilt Chamberlain, as a rookie, led these Pistons to the championships, starting his career with a title.
⓷ The Cincinnati Royals become the first team in NBA history to four-peat after taking the 1970 Title, their NBA-best ninth championship.
⓸ The 76ers pull off one of the rarest feats in professional sports - a comeback after trailing 0-3 in a series. This is the franchise's third title (prior two were won as the Syracuse Nationals).
⓹ The Royals league-best tenth title comes in their seventh straight Finals appearance. From 1963 through 1972, the Royals won seven championships and competed in nine out of ten Finals. In OTL, the Royals left Cincinnati at the conclusion of the 1972 season, which they do here as well despite their success - because what are butterflies?
⓺ This marked the tenth Finals between the Royals and the 76ers franchises in their history.
⓻ This is the first time the Boston Celtics and Los Angeles Lakers have met in the Finals in this TL.
⓼ The LeBron James-led Utah Jazz become the first team to 3-peat since the 1973-75 76ers, nearly 40 years ago.
⓽ The Utah Jazz join the 1971 76ers as the only teams in NBA history to come back from an 0-3 deficit in the Finals to win it. The Jazz are the third franchise to win at least six titles, joining the 76ers (6) and the Kings (12).

⓵ Pettit won the MVP in his rookie season.
⓶ Robertson breaks Bob Cousy's record for most consecutive MVP awards.
⓷ Barry unseats Oscar Robertson, becoming the fifth person to win the MVP award in NBA history. Note - in the league's first 20 seasons, only five players have won the award.
⓸ Alcindor, who would later change his name to Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, joins Bob Pettit as the second rookie to win MVP.
⓹ Abdul-Jabbar wins his third straight MVP award, his first under the name Kareem Abdul Jabbar. He does so as a member of the now Houston Rockets, who left San Diego during the 1971 off-season.
⓺ Johnson's 1989 MVP award ties him with Oscar Robertson for most MVPs (seven total) and most consecutive MVPs (five in a row).
⓻ LeBron wins his 3rd MVP award after becoming the first player in this TL to average a triple double for a season.
⓼ LeBron ties Oscar Robertson and Magic Johnson for most MVPs awards at 7.
⓽ With his eighth MVP award, LeBron passes Magic and Oscar Robertson as the player with the most MVPs in NBA history.

New Orleans Saints over Bay State Patriots: 23-17

This is based in my timeline I refer to as NFL-PCFL. In this world, the meeting between Lamar Hunt and George Halas has a better outcome and as a result, the Dallas Texans, Houston Oilers and Minnesota Vikings join the NFL. With the AFL now dead in the water, the three western teams of the rebel league met with the 49ers and Rams ownership and decided to form their own league. Eventually, shortly before the preseason the Chicago Cardinals, now in Saint Louis, joined the league. That league is called the PCFL.

The titles from 1933-1959 are all real.
