This evening Ryan Leaf, the All-Pro Quarterback lead the Detroit Lions to their 5th Superbowl in 9 years. Not only has Fisher become the first female to win a major open-wheel race, but has become the first woman to win the Indianapolis 500 and have her likeness on the Borg-Warner Trophy. Fisher denounces rumors of a move to NASCAR, saying that "I've won my first Indy 500, now I want more." Fisher goes on to win at the Michigan 400 and the Kentucky 300, but fails to win the IRL Championship, losing to Penske Racing's Gil de Ferran after crashing out in the series finale at Texas Motor Speedway on lap 165.

Barry Bonds becomes World Series MVP as the San Francisco Giants defeat the Anaheim Angels in 6 games to win the Club's first World Series since their move to San Francisco in 1957. Giants Manager Dusty Baker named NL Manager of the Year.

U.S. Women's Hockey Team defends their 1988 Gold Medal, defeating Canada 5-3 at the Salt Lake City Olympics. Team Captain Cammi Granato immediately announces her retirement upon winning her team's second consecutive gold medal.

Dale Earnhardt, Jr. wins the Daytona 500, dedicating the win to his late father, who was killed at the same race in 2001. Dale Junior goes on to win the NASCAR Championship.
