alternate spanish civil war TL

This timeline is based on France ignoring what Britain wanted which was non intervention

1936
General Franco revolts and starts the Spanish civil war
Due to there being a more interventionist government in France at the time France helps the Spanish republic and ignores Britain’s call for non intervention Italy and Germany send arms to Franco. Soviet Union and Mexico helps the republic as well
November By this time the nationalists have made fewer gains than they did OTL
December a German boat trying to send arms to the nationalists is sunk by a French ship
Tensions increase and in January 1937 France declares war on Germany Italy does the same in February

This will cause a totally different war, whit axis on the defensive since day one and France clearly being the aggressor, i can't see a reason for GB to join the fight, not even if Poland backstabs the germans over Danzig...

Or will You bring Mexico and USSR in the dance?

What is the PoD?

the POD is that due to France having numerous governments a more interventionist government takes power. As for bringing the soviet union and Mexico into the the TL it looks quite possible

The Blum government in charge in 1936 was interventionist. It was british pressure what prevented him from helping the Republicans. French help would probably butterfly away the soviet intervention.

And France declaring war on Germany alone in 1937 is ASB, no matter how interventionist this interventionist french government is.

There is a lot of potential here, but you would need something more substantial as a PoD.

Yes, as a revenge for that battleship shelling Almería, so much for non-interventionism.

It has been recently revealed that the republican government actually considered the idea of declaring war on Germany after that, hoping that France and Britain would have to act.

Yup! totally ASB, but wars could escalate, say that France is forced to DoW Falangist Spain over something really pivotal, and Germany does the same to Republican Spain over a similar matter: A proxy war doomed to go hot over a naval collision?

I do not think France would have liked to have fought a war on two Fronts. And there were many French who wanted nothing to do with war. Remember, after WW I many french were weary of war.
