Alternate Scramble for Africa to include as many colonist nations as possible?

What is the largest quantity of colonizing nations that could have realistically participated in an alternate version of the Scramble for Africa, and what would they be?

I always wondered what would it take for Brazil and Argentina to get in on it. Maybe even Uruguay just so people can remember that they exist :openedeyewink:

If some Indian states survive and modernize (Bengal, Mysore, Marathas, Punjab, etc.) they could theoretically, or a maybe a stronger Persia.

They have plenty of their own territory to 4X on in the 1800's.

Anyways, the Ottomans are your best bet. Keep/regain control of Egypt, and there's plenty of opportunity to explore down the Nile and expand their influence over East Africa and the Nile basin. The Belgian State (as opposed to just Leopold) also had the capacity to jump in if not the inclination, with a strong industry that required inputs, a population surplus to provide your coastal settler core, and exports that could use a captive market.

Greece, the Netherlands, Scandinavian Countries and the US are all among possible candidates, in addition to the ones already mentioned, though none of them particularly likely, with post-1800 PODs. Also Austria, though it's an even longer shot.

During the 15-17th century there were more European based states that had colonial holdings in Africa. Most of these holdings were small though, often compromising nothing more than a fort.

No Canada will not. They were a dominion of Britain (home rule). Canada, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa only received independence after 1931.

As for Argentina or Brazil it all depends on Britain. They refused to allow Brazil take over the Portuguese colonies after independence in 1821. So for any non European country we need Britain the dominant power to allow it.

What about USA if they had gone down a different path that could happen
They went after Asian colonies since they felt that was their natural playground. As for Africa, I find that hard to imagine with all the northeast America opposition.

Why? They have plenty of much better, more profitable, and easier to secure options at any given point in time.
Liberia was never a US colony but was land bought by private individuals (charity) with purpose of creating a land for free Africans who wished to return to Africa. This is about as far from a colony as you can get.
