Alternate running mates for JFK?

As it says on the tin. I've heard Symington was seriously considered over LBJ in 60'. Were there any other prominent choices?

Scoop Jackson, HHH, and Orville Freeman were considered as well.

The first two are too liberal. Scoop was pro-civil rights back when it did not mean busing and Hubert Humphrey was hated by the South for obvious reasons.

Freeman called for martial law during a strike, so unions may dislike him. He was also moderately pro-civil rights.

There's Al Gore, Sr, who might be palatable to Northern liberals as he didn't sign the Southern Mainfesto.

Scoop Jackson is an unknown. He brings nothing to the ticket. Symington could shore up support among the Truman camp, would add experience and age, and could help in certain areas. However, he is no Johnson and refused to speak before segregated audiences, which could endanger southern support or at least not add to it. With Humphrey, you shore up liberals but endanger the south.

LBJ, while on shaky terms with the Kennedys, was, I think, JFK's best bet.

We can debate the merits of the vice presidential picks, but I will argue it is a bit of obsfustufucation on the issue of winning the 1960 election. Kennedy/Johnson held a rather strong lead due to serious missteps by Nixon. It was relatively later in the campaign that Nixon came from behind, hence why it was as close as it was on Election Day. So I would argue that Kennedy can win with another running mate depending on the shape of the campaigns. However, Johnson was the best choice because he was so strong of a running mate and pushed Kennedy over the top following Nixon's recovery.

That's what I mean. A Kennedy/Humphrey or Kennedy/Symington could well have won, but differently, to be sure.
