Alternate Presidential election of 1864

Who do you guys think would have run for the Republican and Democratic parties in 1864 had Lincoln lost in 1860? Let's just say Joseph Lane was president after the election was thrown to the House and no one could get the necessary votes to be president. Thus leaving Joseph Lane, Breckinridge's running mate, to be president after the Senate confirms him.

Well, this kind of depends on how Lane's presidency goes, doesn't it? Are we assuming no secession crisis or rebellion of any kind? In either case, I think it's safe to assume President Lane seeks another term, though if the Democrats (or a faction thereof) nominates him is another question.

I can't imagine there would be any secession crisis because the South would have a friendly president in Lane. What reason could there be for secession?

I was referring to the free states; the idea that there would be issues with the slavery issue still coming to a head as the North and/or West pushed back against slave power was discussed in other threads on 1860.
I don't think the north would secede. They were under no threat and while they would be upset, the north never threatened secession like the South did. Secession was more of a southern idea.

Well, the Hartford Convention happened, but that wasn’t about slavery, so I see your point.
