In pre-19th century writing, the words "race", "nation", and "people" (as a singular noun), were often used interchangeably. I think then that the term "Nationalism" could be replaces with "Racism" or "Racialism". I do wonder though, how it will change the way in which what we today understand as Nation or Race are perceived. Do nations become more "racial", i.e. would a Frenchman, an Englishman and a German feel part of the same nation? It could also mean that the concept of nation becomes more racial in the way that "scientific racism" now divides races according to national lines, with French, German, Japanese etc. all become distinct races that are (pseudo-)scientifically studied and categorized according to their "racial characteristics".
