Oftentimes it seems that when I see people write out alternate histories of American politics, even with PODs that go back decades, they'll often conclude with the Democratic and Republican Parties in roughly the same spot they are/were IOTL - that is, running on similar platforms*, representing the same demographic groups, winning the same combination of states in the Electoral College, etc.
So... what are some specific PODs after, say, the 1932 presidential election that could have given the United States different political alignment? The change from OTL's current alignment could be slight or drastic, but I'm asking how the parties could've left the parties with different platforms, a different coalition of voters, a different geographic base, etc. These could be changes to the party itself (say, a different candidate becoming the Republican or Democratic nominee in a given year that runs on a different platform, causing butterflies), or changes to the country at large that cause the parties to act differently than they did IOTL (say, more or less immigration making the country somewhat demographically different).
I'm asking about the US specifically, but if you have similar thoughts about any other countries like the UK or France, feel free to share.
*Yes, sometimes people will ask how to make the Republicans socially liberal and the Democrats socially conservative or something like that, but this gets at only part of what I am asking.
