Alternate Outcomes of Diadochi Wars

The aftermath of Alexander's death seems to be a quite unexplored area of alternate history. I'd like for there to be some suggestions of really cool and interesting scenarios - there seems to be a myriad of possibilities.

Arrange for the Seleucid King Antiochus III (the Great) focus his attention and ambitions to his east instead of the west, perhaps even conquering at least the northern part of India in the process. The Mauryans would be in decline by this point.

Antiochus realises that it's better to consolidate his rule in the Balkans rather than getting heavily involved in Asia Minor. He might take more of Southern Greece and possibly even Dalmatia. They're far harder to defeat for the Romans.

Out of the Diadochi, Seleucus I Nicator was the closest into reuniting Alexander the Great's old empire. In fact, he had the whole of Alexander's conquest save for Egypt which was ruled by the Ptolemies and intended on moving to capture Macedonia and Thrace. He intended to leave the Asian portion of the empire to his half-Persian son Antiochus by Apama while ruling the old Macedonian kingdom for the remainder of his days. He had crossed into the Chersonese when he was assassinated by Ptolemy I's son, Ptolemy Keraunos. Imagine if Seleucus' guards killed if not captured Ptolemy Keraunos before he could committ the deed.

The Seleucid armies were indeed large and powerful compared to the other Successor states and it seemed certain that after conquering Macedonia and Thrace, he would march into the city-states of Greece. Seleucus was seventy seven when he was killed and I doubt he had much time left before he died. If he does have a lot of time left in him, I can see him allying with Pyrhhus of Epirus and facing the Gallic invasions of the Balkans. What of Ptolemy Keraunos? If he's captured, Seleucus might make him an offer he can't refuse.

There are lots of possibilities:
Perdiccas crushes Ptolemy, as said above.
Cassander loses to Polyperchon.
  • Antigonus wins the Third Diadochi War.
Pyrrhus holds onto Macedon.
  • Meleager kills Perdiccas.
  • Antipater loses the Lamian War
Antipatrid Macedon survives.
And more...

What about Eumenes winning decisively in Asia? He was the only real General loyal to the Argead Royal House, so could we see the Argeads surviving and Alexander IV ruling over the Empire?

Pft, no way. Eumenes was loyal to Perdiccas and himself. The kings were just a convenient excuse to take up arms again after Nora against Antigonus.

Let's be honest here, Alexander IV wasn't ever going to actually rule. I'd imagine some kind of shogun situation with Perdiccas and his suppoters being the top dawg.

Anyway, some possibilities.

1. Perdiccas defeats Ptolemy and Antipater, becomes regent.

2. Perdiccas defeats Ptolemy and Antipater, gets a son with Cleopatra and kills Alexander IV, proclaiming himself as king.

3. Seleucus fails in his endeavours to conquer the East, allowing Antigonus to focus on his western enemies.

4. Craterus defeats Eumenes, thus becoming a rival to Antigonus.

5. Eumenes and Alketas defeat Antigonus in Asia Minor, setting off a big civil war.

6. Eumenes defeats Antigonus in Persia, becomes basically Seleucus.

7. Antigonus succesfully invades Egypt, he becomes supreme.

8. Demetrius engages Cassander earlier decisively in Thessaly, the Antigonids retain Macedon.

Etc.

How about Arsinoe living longer? She was only 46 when she died, after winning the equivalent of the triple crown.

If Eumenes comes out on top, it'd be very much in his best interests after for Alexander IV to become king of the whole empire. For starters, he was really good friends with Olympias, and pissing off Olympias is not a road you want to go down. Even if that really isn't a good enough explanation (it isn't far from it), Eumenes was a Greek among Macedonians. He had no hope of actually being the ruler himself, the only reason he got any extremely reluctant support from some Macedonian generals and soldiers at all was his persistant claiming that Alexander was guiding him, and he was only trying to preserve the Argead house. If Alexander IV grows up and gets the throne, it would be thanks to Eumenes-he would be very much in Eumenes debt, and Eumenes would essentially be his right hand man for a the early part of his reign.

Pyrrhus could certainly conquer Macedon and maybe do something from there (IIRC, he had claims on Egypt) so Egypt might be the next big campaign for him.

Well I should have been clearer. When I said macedon I meant macedon and Greece. As for the rest o was referring to KOM about Pyrrhus uniting Alexandra empire.

I means, a thing I always found curious is why Alexander and the macedonians, so 'greecified', didn' try well more to take in all of main cultual greec areas (I may be wrong, but some areas escaped, small places), and why Magna Greca-Sicilia, who was close, greecified quite and relatively rich too I was told was kinda spared. I means, the whole 'I am heir of greecedom' thing he had as well as wishing to conquer the world.

So, maybe such a guy would turn attention there, dunno....
