Alternate Nationalism

Inspired by another thread:

What does it take for nationalism to arise in a part of the world other than Europe?
What are the unique circumstances which created it and are their other places on earth which could have favored nationalism?

I think one of the most important factors that lead to nationalism is the fragmantation of Europe. Would the same happen to a fragmented China or are there other factors to consider?

:)

Early nationalism is a part of many non western nations and cultures ('s past)...

The turkish, iranian, han-chinese cultural spheres (and by example the clash of the former against the imposition of arabisation), the feeling of 'japanity,, etc...

You had better define what you mean by "nationalism". Ethnically, geographically, and lingusitically defined "nations" developed everywhere in the world state-level societies evolved - which means just about every inhabited continent except Australia.

nationalism is the ideology according to which the borders of the state should be the same with that of the nation.

nation is a group of people who feel they belong to the same nation :)confused:)

according to Ernest Gellner and other constructivists, but also marxist analysists, the rise of the idea of the nation is a by-product of the industrial society. The industrial society demanded a large tank of workforce, with the values of relatively high-level education, common educational and cultural background and common collateral goals. The means to achieve all that was the nation.
In that sense, in order to have nationalism, you should first have industrialism.

MODERN Nationalism. But the ancient roots and forms of it are quite older. A sense of belonging to a nation, a culture, a Volk already existed; ancient Greece, the 'sinitude', etc...

And BTW, Ethnic nationalism is not the only one - civic nationalism exist too, and is old as well. Rome was perhaps the first case of it, as I would say early caliphates perhaps, and modern forms started at the French Revolution and the state who formed, perhaps.

The Raushaniyya movement in the Mughal Empire in the 1500s was alleged to have been pushing for a Pashtun brotherhood; in fact Jalalabad is named after one of its leaders, Jalala Ansari.

I do not think nationalism is a regional phenomenon, I personally think it's a natural extension of tribalism and will occur anywhere there's widespread literacy and communication, because those things lead to a sense of belonging to a greater national group as opposed to a feeling of belonging to a group only containing people you personally know or are within a few degrees of separation from.
