Hi everyone,
In OTL, the Monroe Doctrine was enacted in 1823 such that it would be the US that would officially protect the ex-Spanish colonies in Central and South America from European interference, including from Britain. (This was what John Quincy Adams, then Secretary of State, advocated.) George Canning, the British foreign secretary, had earlier proposed a joint British-US policy to protect the ex-Spanish colonies.
I was wondering, given that Adams was distrustful of Canning and was cautious and stubborn, would Adams have resigned from his post as secretary of state had President James Monroe gone along with Canning's advice rather than that of Adams? If so, would Andrew Jackson, Martin Van Buren, and William Henry Harrison have each been presidents earlier than their respective OTL terms (with no John Quincy Adams presidency)? Or would there have been other effects on the US presidency?
