Alternate Microstates

I've had this vision of an alternate independent San Francisco Bay area, post-Gold Rush, surrounded by a Mexican California. Still full of immigrants from Asia, Europe and the U.S. Not sure how it would come about.

I had an idea similar to that for an Alexandrian city-state to emerge.

What about the Commonwealth of Darien - the former Scottish colony in Panama?

Or the Free City of Tangiers? Its independance guaranteed by most of the Western European powers, it never reunites with Morocco.

Any cities you think would have the potential to end up as a microstate?

The City of London. They have a lot of autonomy anyway. Perhaps they could go further and backed by international corporations and banks that want a place free from interfering governments they are able to get a Vatican city type deal with the UK government which accepts in return for preferential loans.

Probably Future Timeline-ish but I like the idea! (from a writing point of view)

What about a Christiania style autonomous neigbourhood within other cities? Williamsburg Brooklyn? Camden town, London?

Well, maybe if Stalin and the western allies can't agree on Stettin it might end up as a neutral city-state.

(Thank you research I did for a Stettin flag!)

A few of the islands off the coasts of Arab states might make for interesting city-states, but I suspect that those require a far earlier POD.

I saw that, thank you for that little slice of inspiration.

Anyway, a less dickish Soviet leader may allow for the International Free City of Berlin.

New York City, of course. Completely unlike the rest of New York State, somewhat estranged from the rest of the USA during the civil war, a large and ethnically mixed population. I think there is at least a 50% change that had the South won the civil war, NYC might have seen reason to secede from New York state and the USA and become an independent or quasi-independent city state

Zanzibar could easily remain seperate from Tanganyika. The Free City of Danzig is another possibility, or maybe Königsberg.

If New York City became independent at any point in history, Long Island would likely go with it, since most people who live there were born in the city itself, or
have jobs in the city.
