hey, all. to clarify, this isn't about alternate projections for mapmaking projects, it's about hypothetical projections within a TL
this thought occurred to me earlier. probably most of us are familiar with the Robinson and Mercator projections for mapping our spherical planet, and a few variations of them such as the one centered on the Pacific. now, what kind of map projections does everyone think would come up in alternate worlds where different countries came to power over those IOTL? what i mean by this is what kind of arrangement of the continents do y'all think would arise in a world where, say, the Persian Empire dominated instead of Rome, and from that point onwards what we call the Middle East is considered the "center" of the world? in addition to OTL's "main" placement of the prime meridian and some other ones from OTL (again, the one passing through Japan comes to mind), what other longitudes could become prominent in an alternate world?
the one that occurred to me for this was a hypothetical prime meridian placed on the line made by Pope Alexander VI for the Treaty of Tordesillas in a world heavily influenced by an alternate Spain, bisecting Brazil and Greenland (probably for the formalized 1494 treaty rather than the original line from 1493) placing Europe roughly where North America would be on our standard Worlda maps and having the Americas on the right-hand side of the map
