I'm writing an outline for a timeline (which I may eventually start posting) and I need some help. Due to an earlier POD, France is unable to sell Louisiana to the US. My question is: What is Napoleon's next move? His main motivations for selling, as I understand it, was because he had abandoned his dreams of a French empire in America after losing hispanola, and he didn't want Britain to just conquer it in the upcoming war. Both of these factors are still in place in my TL, so I assume he's still trying to sell it. Could he try to sell it back to Spain? The rest of the world still thought Spain owned it due to the secretive nature of the Treaty of San Ildefonso, so that might make sense. Would he try to sell it to the British since he thinks that they will conquer it anyway? At least that way he gets something out of it. Would he try to defend it? I googled it, and he didn't seem to think it was really worth keeping, so I don't think that he would try. Still, it could serve as a distraction to the British, which might be strategically helpful. Is there another European power who might be interested in buying it? Thanks in advance for the help. :)
