Alternate Lives: Timeline 191

Just as the title says, write of the fates of famous people of OTL and how they fared in Timeline 191.

William Franklin Graham Jr.- Born in the Confederate States of America on the eve of the end of the First Great War. His father became a local Freedom Party organizer while Graham too joined the youth movements of the Freedom Party. In the late 1930s Graham joined the Confederate Army and in '41 with the start of the Second Great War participated in Operation Blackbeard and later in the defense of Atlanta. When the Confederate cause became obviously lost, the now Lieutenant Graham organize a group of guerrillas in the Appalachian Mountains of North Carolina. He fought for some three years before being gunned down by U.S. soldiers.

Howard Phillips Lovecraft-Born in Providence, Rhode Island. Lovecraft was a brilliant student at an early age and became a scientific theorist at Brown University. He became a physcist and made great work in the field of quantum mechanics. Indeed due to his scientific brilliance, Lovecraft was called the "Union's Einstein". He made especially important strides in the field of nuclear physics and in the Second Great War was involved in the Union Superbomb Project. His most famous words were "Now I become death, the destroyer of worlds" quoting Hindu scripture. After the war he helped invent the sunbomb and develop nuclear power as a feasible energy source.

Elvis Presley: Small boy killed in Tennessee by a wayward United States bombing run. His twin brother, Jesse Garon, went on to become a music star. (OOC: Jesse Garon was OTL Elvis's stillborn twin)

Francisco Franco: Spanish officer, and later politician.

Heinrich Himmler: Little known German officer of Military Police.

Hermann Goering: German flying ace in Great War. He became addicted to drugs in the late 30s and was reconscripted into German Air Force at start of Second Great War. On a walk one day, he was killed when his sheer weight set of an anti-tank mine.

Benito Mussoulini - an Italian politician after the Great War. He made the famous campaign promise that he would make the trains run on time. Despite the attractiveness of this promise, he was never elected to high office, and toiled in obscurity throughout his career.

Robert E. Howard-A Confederate race theorist. Most famous for writing various works that vilified black and glorified whites. He was quite bitter against blacks and was appointed as Assistant Secretary of Culture and Broadcasting by Featherston. His works though controversial for it's racism and pro-Confederecy sentiment remains popular with fantasy audiences.

Amelia Earhart-Women aviator from the United States. During the Second Great War she was in Ohio as the Confederate attack began. In a surprise attack near an air force base in Cincinnati Earhart seized control of a fighter plane and dove in against the Confederates. Earhart in her first battle shot down six planes, thus successfully defending the airfield and was awarded various honors for her bravery.

Jesse Owens- TL-191 name Onesimus- young black athlete born in Alabama 1913, his sharecropper family being 1 of the few to make it out of the CSA in the post-Great War turmoil to Cleveland, Ohio; Onesiums Owens excels as an athlete at his Cleveland school, then, upon tensions erupting with the CSA again in the 1930s, decides to do what he can to help blacks fight against the tyrannical Featherstone regime. Onesimus is 1 of the 1st blacks to be secretly recruited by US Army intelligence to secretly, at great risk to himself, smuggle arms to black guerillas in Alabama & Georgia to fight CS security forces & their Mexican auxiliaries- he is later sent to assist in the Richmond ghetto rising of 1943 to assist in resistance against the Confederate forces crushing the rising, where, in the face of overwelming odds, he goes down fighting while charging a whole platoon of Freedom Party Guards with a pistol in each hand.

(just for starters)

That's original... cut and paste directly from Turtlewiki. :p

Some more:
Charles Young- TL-191 name Caractacus- as a young black man in his native Kentucky during the US invasion in 1882 of the 2nd Mexican War, he earns recognition from his mater & Confederate soldiers & officers close by thru picking up a Tredegar from a fallen CS infantryman & shooting at the invading Yankees; later becomes a black Confederate NCO, involved in fighting Yankees in the Great War on the Roanoke Front, awarded the 2nd highest Confederate award for bravery for singelhandedly charging & destroying a Union barrel- is even recommended for promotion to officer rank by his highly impressed commanding officer, which of course if denied on the basis that the Confederacy does not recognise that blacks can ever be promoted to officer rank; becomes involved after the Great War in attempting to advocate greater civil rights & organise political rallies for Negroes in the CSA, but is killed in a protracted street battle between black Confederate veterans & Freedom Party thugs in 1932

Hamilton Fish III- serves as a Capt on the Roanoke Front during the Great War, sees black Confederates in action against US forces, & praises their bravery under fire & tenacity in attack- upon returning from the front & taking his place in NY politics, he becomes a firm advocate for the US to likewise authorise the recruitment of black troops, only to be rebuffed at every turn; by the time the 2nd Great War comes, although accused of pro-Featherston leanings, he, upon re-entering the US Army as a full Colonel, becomes the director of the secret US program to supply arms to the black guerillas in the Confederacy, & also in the counter-intelligence program against similar Confederate intelligence efforts to supply arms to the Mormons in Utah & the Canadians

Booker T. Washington- TL-191 name Bucephalas- former slave intellectual in CSA advocating that Negroes in the CS advance themselves thru their own honest efforts to build a better future for themselves; is later assassinated by black Communists for being an Uncle Tom on the eve of the Congaree Socialist uprising in 1915

Arthur Currie- Canadian military commander, credited with, while having only relatively limited manpower & resources available, & without support from British troops, successfully holding off the US offensives into Canada until 1916, then continues to fight a good defensive action against Gen Irving Morrell's continued barrel offensive well into 1917; killed by a stray US artillery shell only days before the armistice in June 1917

also, just a quick suggestion- since Bush was born in texas but then grew up in Connecticut, whiy not have him perhaps be instead involved in organising & participating in the US Army's false flags ops as conducted by the likes of the 133rd Special Recon Coy in THE GRAPPLE ?

Which Bush are you referring to? George H.W. Bush was born in Milton, Massachusetts and George W. Bush was born in New Haven, Connecticut.

Babe Ruth - Little known baseball star for the Brooklyn Trolley Dodgers, generated some interest in baseball in the years after the Great War, but was unable to make it popular on a national level.

William Jefferson Blythe
- Blythe was born shortly after the Second Great War in occupied Arkansas. After his father was killed by US troops in Hot Springs as retaliation for the murder of a US soldier, Blythe became an anti-US militant as a teen and was killed in 1966 for the attempted murder of Congressman Joseph P. Kennedy Jr.

Hmmm, for some reason I thought that both Bushes were born in Tx- but anyways, can you guys think fo any prominent OTL personality born in the South but raised in the North who could similarly fill the shoes of a spec ops soldier in the 133rd Special Recon Coy (who're defntly among my fave characters in the TL-191 series) ?

Other ideas for ATL personalities:
Jackie Robinson- TL-191 name Belisarius- becomes another black resistance leader in Georgia along similar lines to Spartacus, who survives until US troops enter his area of operations- perhaps shows how good a baseball player he is when playing friednly games with US occupation troops, who recommend that he play in the US Major Leagues post-war...

Benjamin O. Davis Snr- born as OTL in DC, but his family moves to Philadelphia asap thereafter during the 2nd Mexican War- after the war, he repeatedly requests to join the US Army but is turned down due to his race- however, his determination is recognised by Gen John Pershing, who hires Davis Snr as his civilian orderly- during the Mormon Rising of 1915, as a result of seeing his employer assassinated, Davis actually becomes directly involved fighting alongside US troops against the insurgents (who in turn single him out on account of his being black- & also being inspired by Confederate agents to do so), until he is killed in action by a Mormon 'Featherston fizz'in 1917, just before the signing of the armistice

Benjamin O/. Davis Jnr- likewise inspired to enter the US Army by his father's experiences- he is similarly unsuccessful attempting to enter the US Army, but when the 2nd Great War breaks out, he is able to sign up as a civilian contractor being involved in hauling supplies to US forces fighting in the Pittsburgh campaign, then later fighting their way into the Confederacy (a la Cincinnattus)- including being decorated for bravery for assisting US soldiers & other contractors who repel an ambush by Confederate bushwhackers somewhere in Tennessee in 1943; after this incident, he becomes 1 of the first blacks to be accepted into the US Army under Pres Truman's 1944 Executive Order, and has just completed his formal basic training when the Confederate surrender is announced...

Wasn't Ruth said to be a Football player in TL-191? And didn't JPK Jr. die?

He would have played football. ITTL baseball is a regional sport in New York and New England, football is the national pastime.

And didn't JPK Jr. die?

Not that I'm aware of.

http://turtledove.wikia.com/wiki/Joseph_P._Kennedy_Jr.

"Later in the Second Great War, Kennedy was captured by Confederate forces and imprisoned in Andersonville. He did not escape when a tornado breached the prison's perimeter."
There's a stretch of plausibility of him surviving, but I think Turtledove's initial intention was for him to die in that.

Here's an image I did of JPK Jr. as a politician a while back. Just to add a little atmosphere.

I wonder if Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons said to eachother:
"Hey I have this idea for a comic, there's this guy thats a washed up Costumed Hero and gets killed, and some really badass guy with a cool mask comes in an investigates, *And just tells the whole thing about the idea."
"No, that would suck."

Actually, an oblique reference to Howard was made in TCCH. He wrote a story about the air war during the Great War. Jeff Pinkard didn't think it was realistic, but it was the best story in the pulp mag in which it was published.
