Alternate Liberias?

Or is it Liberiae? Anyway...

I've seen a few other maps with Liberia or any US freed-slave colony in different places around Africa. So:

1. What was the rationale behind putting Liberia where it was? Just that most slaves had come from that western coastal area?

2. Where's the weirdest place you've put Liberia/equivalent, or seen it put?

3. What else could such a country be named?

Here's a random idea: Liberia in the Phillipines.

I would love to see timelines featuring one or more of those. Unfortunatly, my mind is rather non-functioning at the moment, so i'll leave the actual work to others.

As for #s 1 and 2: I think it being visited by westerners but not directly controled by European influence at the time was part of it.

I remember a quote about Liberia, I think James Forten was the one who said it. "...Perhaps if I should only be set on the shore of that distant land, I should recognize all I might see there, and run at once to the old hut where my forefathers lived a hundred years ago."

I think it is an amusing quote, and shows what half-baked idea Liberia was.

That said, there are probably many, many places where Liberia could have ended up. After all, there is a huge amount of uncolonized coast that could be used.

5,000 timeline energy points for anyone who can suggest a scenario in which Liberia is located in Palestine.

Someone says that slave Africans are part of one of the Lost Tribes of Israel. I'm guessing that only Britain has the strength to invade the Ottoman Empire and force that country to give up Palestine, which becomes the "Kingdom of Zion"...

I dunno, sounds like crap, but I guess it could work.

That's a rather nice idea, actually.

However, if this alternate Liberia is founded around the same time as OTL Liberia, then that means that it's founded somewhere in the 1820's, and isn't the Spanish position in the Phillipines at this point still strong enough to deter any American attempts to invade and conquer the archipelago?

A Liberia in (northeastern) New Guinea would be much more feasable.

Wasn't Liberia put where it was due to Sierra Leone (i.e. the British verion of the same thing)

Liberia In Mauritania and West Sahara, it would make sense, poor mostly inhabited wastedland, but the Settlers could survive there, thanks to a less hostile locale disease package, and it would be easy to drive out the locals.

New Guinea and the Phillipines have too many people there to start with. And the logistics of a pacific liberia don't work out.

The Phillipines?

Maybe.

New Guinea?

Certainly not - there's no way that New Guinea during the 1820's (ergo, before the Dutch and British had become interested in New Guinea - at this point, the western coast of New Guinea was de jure Dutch, and that's about it) had more people than the territory that became Liberia in OTL.

West Africa was not a desolate jungle, you know...

And the logistics of a pacific liberia don't work out.

If the Dutch and the Portugese can successfully run colonies in Southeast Asia, then why wouldn't the US be able to create an ATL Liberia (which would remain a defacto sattelite state for a while, anyway) in New Guinea?

Granted, it might not be such a good idea from an economic POV, but similar mistakes have been made in history.
