Alternate leadership for free french

Hey i need help with some (not mine though) hw, and most people here are older than me sooo....

de Gaulle was an ahole we all know that, :) so assuming de gaulle just remains a general instead of becoming leader of the ff who would be the new leader and how would that turn out?

We were thinking about a milatary jauta but we dont know that much about france or who was in the milatary at the time. I guess haveing the civilian leadership excape to africa isnt out of the question eather.

Thx in advance:D.

edit: 300 posts!

well for whatever reason the Americans could not stand De Gaulle and tried to find someone/anyone to prop up in his place as leader of the Free French. If I recall the preferred American candidates were General Giraud (Outmaneverd politically by De Gaulle) and Admiral Darlan (OTL assassinated in the first weeks of 1943)

Darlan Hated America and the UK with a passion so I cant see him working as head of the Free French forces while Giraud was politically niave and I doubt he had the political skills to suceed in the post. As for other Candidates I dont know enough about the pre war french Government and Army to pick any other candidates.

The Americans wanted the Vichy French to go to war and tried long and hard to get them to do so, with no real result. For a long time, they did not recognise the Free French government. There were little fight in the Vichy French guys, unfortunately, so it was badly invested diplomatic resources.

Yeah the American ambassador to (Vichy) France Adm Leahy somehow managed to convince himself that all the allies needed to succeed was to gain the support of Vichy as opposed to De Gaulle. I read a book on the subject a year or so a go that dealt with all the political manipulations around the subject it was quite interesting. I think it was "allies at war" but am not a hundred percent sure on that.
