So I've had this scenario rolling around in my head a little while. What if Franklin Pierce had been renominated in 1856 with John Quitman as his VP, won against Fremont, and then kicked the bucket a few months after his inauguration? (This leaves Quitman to take his place.) Lincoln still wins in 1860 as OTL, and Quitman may or may not be renominated but still will lose.

So here's the question: What effects would the latter part of the Pierce administration, and then the Quitman administration, have on the Civil War?
