The casting for the lead role in Star Trek (The Original) has a storied history.

Originally, Jeffrey Hunter was cast to be Captain Christopher Pike, the precursor to Kirk, which he played in the original pilot. When that pilot wasn't picked up, a second one was going to be produced, but Hunter's schedule wasn't open to shoot that second pilot. The hunt for an actor to play the new Captain, James R./T. Kirk was on.
However, William Shatner was just one of many possibilities for who could have gone on to fill that role of James Kirk. Among other choices were the already mentioned Jeffrey Hunter, as well as Jack Lord, who would later rise to fame as the star of Hawaii 5-0. However, Lord wanted too much ownership (50% of the series) for series creator Gene Roddenberry's and Desilu studios' liking.

So what actors of the 1960's could have gone on to become alternate Captain's of the Enterprise?
