Alternate House Democratic Leader after Gephardt

Well, if I remember right, Martin Frost from Texas was the other person who contested that election. I suppose if he's elected, you see the Democrats become more Blue Dog as a whole, though DeLay's redistricting plan probably would have booted Frost out.

Hoyer might be another choice.
 
Harold Ford of Tennessee also ran in the election as a more centrist candidate; which is actually interesting, because if he had received the position, and then Obama still gets elected on schedule, the nation would have had its first African-American president and Speaker of the House (assuming Ford doesn't try to run for the Senate as in OTL)
