Alternate History U.S. National Soccer

I understand the original rationale as to why there are separate English, Welsh, and Scottish national soccer teams as they were the creators of international soccer. I also see that CONCACAF has no U.N. membership requirement and Puerto Rico, the British and American Virgin Islands are members. Is there a scenario whereby there could be 50 separate and distinct national soccer teams, one for each state, and what would the broader implications be?

More state rivalry? I mean, football teams are the closest you have to this IOTL, but the fact that states (and even cities) often have more than one team and some places lack a major team makes it a true null point. So yeah, more state rivalry, but I'd find it hard to believe that secession or even the change of elections happen thanks to soccer.
