Alternate History: Explain the historical event

The Summer of Italy
An obscure film starring Italian actresses Isabella Rossellini and Antonella Attili, a box office flop when it was first released, but one particular scene trended on TikTok and it soon garnered a cult following who admired the soft, faded color palettes and jazzy soundtrack.

Victoria II vs. Elizabeth III: NSFW Edition

Victoria II vs. Elizabeth III: NSFW Edition
A parody of the War of the Roses set in the near future which made by British republicans following the death of Princess Diana. The film was a surprising success (and not just because of the attractive lead actresses) as the well researched hard sci-fi presented a surprisingly (and unintentionally!) optimistic picture of humanity's future.

The Russian Enclosure

The Russian Enclosure
Ukrainian Youtube video, entirely in black and white, created by an unknown creator (who did not reveal their identity) that mocked the Russian army by comparing them to different sorts of vermin. The final line, which was a popular meme for weeks, is a shrill robotic cry: "The Russian Enclosure demands new victims!"

Rise and fall of the ,Catholic Muhllah' state

The rise of the Ecumenical Republic of Italy to the forefront of European politics during the latter half of the 20th century. Italy itself was united by Pope Sergius V, and its constitution and government were heavily inspired by the papacy and the Catholic church. It combined enlightment-era ideals of republicanism with the older primacy of the Pope in a way that was broadly controversial among Catholics. Under his rule, Italy colonized Libya, Ethiopia, Somalia, and Eritrea.. Libya was settled by Italians extensively, at one point nearly 46% of the Population being "Cirenaici", or European Catholics in Italian Africa. Today, most of them live in the State of Cyrene, where they constitute a majority. Other Italians settled in The Horn of Africa, where they peaked at around 23% of the population, and today form the majority of the population of Eritrea. The Republic fell after the death of Pope Pius the Tenth, who was assassinated by the SS and prompted had his nation invaded by the Germans. Britain, seeking to prevent their holdings in Egypt or Algeria from being seized, rapidly invaded too. When Germany fell in 1947, Italy was re-organized into the modern Italian Confederacy. The term "Catholic Mullah" has often been used to describe the bishops and priests of Italy at this time, who at that time, had a level of influence not dissimilar to the Mullahs of the Islamic Republic of Iran.

The Ascension of Machometus Coraesius Hasimianus

Describes the rise of the Muslim convert Roman family that established the ,Diwan of Rum', an Islamic government that converted mist churches to mosques. After the Split of the Church in 1054 the Byzantine Empire launched a last succesful attack to regain Italy and Exile the Papacy. Instead the Patriach claimed the Papacy for all Christians of the Occident. A bloody campaign of iconoclasts, that gaines controll of the Eastern Papacy, destroyes many shrines and churches in Rome abd desillusioned many Christians. But the Byzantine Empire was weaked and drained of ressources and was attacked from West and East alike. Catholic Normans wanted to reestablish the Papacy, the Muslim armies tried to push for Constantinople. In 1077 Cobstantinople, weakened by infighting between Iconoclast and Iconophils, fell to the Arab armies and their Turkish allies. In Rome, an old Senatorial family began to embrace Islam and converted gradually. They gained followers among the poor folk of the Italian peninsular and also among elites. This family also allied with Muslim powers as they already had diplomatic relations.

Machometus Coraesius Hasimianus had been born in 1094 to the convert Vigillius Coraesius aka Iusufus. He was a politician and also a militsry leader. Out of the Roman Senate He formed the ,Divan of Rum', a Republican like Islamic governmet for the City of Rome and its surroundings.

The proposal and introduction of the Cult of Reason as state religion by Thomas Jefferson
A book written by an American royalist expatriate, whose name has been lost to history, who absolutely despised both the American and French revolutions; in the book, he attempted to lampoon both the American and French revolutions, with more French-style revolution taling place in America, with Thomas Jefferson being a thinly veiled (or, perhaps more accurately, not at all veiled) stand-in for Maximilien Robespierre. The work was critiquing the results of both revolutions in favor British-style monarchism. The political dialogue was clumsy at best and nonsensical at worst, and it did not take off in its own time, ignored by most. It reemerged in relevance in January of 2023, when an undergraduate history student at the Memorial University of Newfoundland stumbled upon and read one of a few surviving copies, and found the inept political dialogue hilarious, prompting her to share it on social media. The book's commentary quickly became a popular meme, especially among history buffs, and revived the book's awareness, leading to a second edition printing (as the original had never warranted an additional one) being announced and its transcription onto, and dissemination across, the Internet.

The Danish-American War of 1899

The 5th blockbuster movie from Steven Spielberg spins off into an unusual direction for the director - alternative history! in The Danish-American War of 1899 Spielberg presents the audience with a small series of incidents in the Dutch East Indies that spiral into first an economic war- one that sees Britain and Japan enter into mutual trading deals, and France's hold on Indochina begin to fall apart, and America putting more screws on China, before erupting into a full on shooting war in 1899.

Told from various people's points of view the main character is Captain William Bakker (Tom Hanks) the commander of a Dutch ship trying to get past an American line to get to his son stuck in Batavia; Cathy Bates plays Jacoba Braam a trader who tries to keep things together in Batavia even as Lukman Sardi's wonderful villain Arfin Qorny tries to stir up a revolt among the native islanders - supplied with weapons from a mysterious benefactor. Commodore Jack Willson (John Colicos) is the American leading the attack on Dutch forces, and Ian McShane's wonderfully hammy Admiral Smith is the sub-commander who ends up expanding the war into China due to an unfortunate sinking...

The Danish-American War of 1899 is beautiful, classic Spielberg cinema - breathtaking, bold, with great performances and an alterative reality that really pulls you in and make you care about these characters. This week's must-see! 9/10 from me.

The Muscovite Crusade

The Muscovite Crusade

In 1549 having consolidated his rule over Russia, Ivan IV proclaimed a Crusade to place the Holy Land back in Christian hands. Unfortunately for him the largely Orthodox establishment disliked the Catholic idea of the Crusades, recalling the sack of Constantinople in 1204, and heavily opposed it. When Ivan's own generals mutinied against him, he was forced to back down and lost most of his influence over the next few years.

The Thinite Rebellion

The Thinite Rebellion
In this alternate timeline, Thinis became a powerful city-state in ancient Egypt, rivaling the more well-known cities of Memphis and Thebes. The Thinite dynasty established a long-lasting and prosperous rule over Egypt, with the pharaohs of Thinis expanding the kingdom's territory and influence throughout the region.

However, in the 13th century BCE, a rebellion broke out in Thinis. The cause of the rebellion is unclear, but it is thought to have been sparked by a combination of economic grievances, religious disputes, and political tensions. The rebellion quickly spread throughout Egypt, with other cities and regions joining the cause.

The Thinite pharaohs attempted to suppress the rebellion, but they were ultimately unsuccessful. The rebels, led by a charismatic and skilled military commander, managed to defeat the Thinite army in several key battles, weakening the power and authority of the pharaohs.

As the rebellion dragged on, the political and social structures of Egypt began to break down. The traditional system of pharaonic rule was challenged, and new power centers emerged throughout the country. Eventually, the Thinite dynasty was overthrown, and a new era of Egyptian history began.

The Thinite Rebellion had far-reaching consequences for Egypt and the wider world. With the collapse of the ancient Egyptian state, the balance of power in the eastern Mediterranean was fundamentally altered. New kingdoms and empires emerged, vying for dominance over the region, and the cultural and religious traditions of ancient Egypt were forever changed.

The Selucians' Revolt

This response, and the accompanying prompt, were both generated by ChatGPT. If this isn't an acceptable thing to do in the future, I apologize. I was interested in seeing how well the AI could do alternate history.

The Selucians' Revolt

Was a Rebellion of the Selucians lead by Herodes the Great against the Roman Empire. The Selucans eventually refused Rome's domination and tried to reestablish old glory. Herodes proclaimed himself Messias of Jawe and forced the priest of the Temple of Salomo to declare him as such. Than he summoned the fame of Alexander and general Seleucos of Macedonia and established a Hellenistic nationalism against the hated Romans. Herodes declared war against Augustus and the devasting war that had shaken the young Imperial Rome began.

The US vs the Holy Mormon Kingdom of Hamurabi
A distinctly odd legal debacle when a descendent of Joseph Smith took over leadership of the Mormon Church. Nicknamed Hamurabi for his insane legalism. He became delusional and renamed the Utah branch to the Holy Kingdom before suing the State for the right to build a Palace of Law on Public land.

King Henry VIII the Evermorned, Saint-King and beloved of Europe.

A most successful work of historical fiction by obscure author J.K Rowling, centring on family dramas of a Europe united under an Anglo-Spanish Hegemony. The first Trinity of books focused on Henry VIII, depicted as an intelligent and charming narcissist who leads Europe to a golden age while his actions at home soon dooms Europe's future to one of eventual decline under successors abused into expressing a cacophony of mental disorders that will self-perpetuate through several generations.

The Ndongo-Dutch Union.
A poem depicting an alternate history where the Dutch were ruled entirely by ghostly women in a matrilineal tyranny, while Ndongo loses war after war and gets embroiled in petty family drama among the illegitimate children of the ruling class. The climax takes place in an eerie garden, where the narcissistic queen of the Dutch sets fire to their surroundings after a failed rebellion destabilizes the economy.
