Leading member of the Russian Social Democratic Party. Although a staunch radical he broke with many of the other Russian leftists by advocating for federalism and national self-determination, up to and including the right of secession. He served a number of key positions in the first and second Martov administrations first as Minister of Justice, where he oversaw the modernisation of Russia's legal codes after the revolution, and later as Foreign Minister, where he sought to build closer ties between Russia and China. He would later make the fateful decision to run in the 1920 Presidential Elections which split the Social Democrat vote and played a role in preventing any of the leftists parties from reaching the run-off resulting in a Kadet victory. This decision ultimately ended his political career with him retiring from party politics later that year eventually becoming a respected academic until his death in 1932.Vladimir Lenin
