alternate flags in Central America

The flags of most Central American countries were modeled on the flag of the United Provinces of Central America, which in turn was influenced by that of Argentina. If (for some reason) Argentina didn't serve as a model for Central America in this regard, would the Central American flags have been inspired instead by the flag of Mexico or perhaps that of Venezuela or Gran Colombia as they were in the 1810s, or what?

IIRC, the main reason why Argentina was the model was because it was a group of ships from Argentina that had liberated the Islas Providencias as the first independent state in Central America, so perhaps have Gran Colombia do that instead?

I don't think they'd have gone for the Flag of Mexico as an inspiration as they declared independence from Mexico, and the links with Gran Colombia may not be strong enough.

Looking at the flags of the member states at the time, most were also based on the Argentine Flag, but El Salvador was clearly taking inspiration from the US, and the UPCA was trying to ape the US in most of her federal structure...

So it sounds like that absent the Argentine model (so to speak), first Isla Providencia and then Central America and then its successor republics would have modeled their flags on those of Gran Colombia or perhaps the USA?

I think it would probably be a mixture of both. Nicaragua claimed Providencia for most of the century, so they might go the USA route for example.

So some Central American republics would have their flags modeled on that of the US, other such republics' flags would be more like those of Gran Colombia, and yet other republics might have a mixture of these influences?

I'd say so. It would depend a lot on how local politics developed though. Guatemala went through a pro-Spanish period which added Red and Gold to the flag, during the rule of the conservatives and reactionaries, Nicaragua's flag was changed to a Yellow-white-pink tricolour for some reason, Costa Rica added the broad red stripe because the government was inspired by the ideals of French Revolution of 1848.

But of these three examples, only Costa Rica's has survived down to the present!
