Alternate First US Presidents?

Who, if anyone can run against George Washington, or say Georgy is unable to become president (maybe he dies or something) who would replace him as first president?

Anybody well known that was interventionist that could have stood a chance?

Does this mean after the adoption of the Constitution?

Otherwise, depending exactly when, we either don't get the Presidency as we know it (maybe a three-man committee instead?), or if he dies in the closing days of the Convention, the CONUS may just not get ratified. GW's support was an important factor, and the votes were close in several states.

If he dies after ratification, then it's John Adams if the first election has already taken place. If not, then maybe Ben Franklin as an interim choice, while they look around for someone more permanent.

Theres always Fredrick Henry Louis as an option if one is killing Washington at the right time.
How likely is it that Fredrick Henry becomes President? Did they even want him to be or were they looking to him as a European prince to become king? Would he be able to get elected in the US, it doesn't seem so but technically no one was born in the US at the time.

You could always prevent Benedict Arnold from getting shafted for credit for the things he accomplished, and he would've easily have replaced Washington as the "core symbol" or such of the Revolution. His military record was second to no one else on the rebel side.

Probably as an American King...like this Election Game, King Henry's America. /advertisement

A respected figure like John Adams, John Jay, John Hancock or Thomas Jefferson could be first. Hancock may be seen as the least partisan.

Excellent. First President of the United States: The Smuggler!

In the '88-'89 election, there would have been several candidates for the Electors to choose from, many of them prominent national figures. There would be at least seven Federalist contenders, and so it's possible that Clinton might have won by simple virtue of being the only serious Anti-Federalist in the race, with the Federalist Electors being too divided to put one person ahead.

Maybe a President Clinton with a Vice-President Adams or Jay? I'm just speculating here. It would certainly be awkward as the dickens.

A potential alternative is that without the presence of Washington, the Federalists solidify behind Adams, and he winds up with somebody like John Jay as his Vice-President.

Really, had he not defected, his face would be on the dollar bill, and we'd have a Benedict Arnold Memorial. I'm obviously using a bit of a butterfly net here, but you know what I mean.
