Alternate European Conflicts: 1880-1920

My limited knowledge of European history allows me to know that the latter half of the 19th century and earlier part of the 20th were a time of heated relations between powers. Traditional powers (Britain and France) feared the rise of Germany as a competitive power in the continent and on the global stage, alliances were brokered, nations expanding their sphere of influence and colonial possessions, and all that nice stuff.

My question is what pan-European conflicts, or -alternatively- grand conflicts which at least draw focus and attention of the global and continental community within Europe can there be given a creative timeframe of 1880 to 1920* (the latter does not require a Great War of 1914 to 1918 to precede it)? Perhaps this can be summarized as things that would steal the thunder of the OTL's Great War, or take it's place.

*I'm not saying a conflict which lasts from 1880 to 1920, but rather one that would exist somewhere in between those years.

The Schnaebele Incident is one that I've started (and, unfortunately, gotten bogged-down) writing a timeline over.

France and Italy coming to blows in 1881 over Tunis, or during the repeated naval war scares of 1887, 1888, and 1891 seems like a good way to get a general European war started as well.

What were the European alliances and relationships of that time?

Yikes...kind of an open-ended question, especially as they were so fluid they could be altered to your needs in any AH of the time.

Austria-Hungary: By 1880, wedded to Germany, though Germany regularly told A-H she would have to go to any war against Russia alone before c. 1890.

France: No firm commitments until the 1890's alliance with Russia.

Germany: Austria and Italy until 1895-ish, agreements with Russia until 1890, only firm supporter Austria-Hungary after 1895.

Italy: Aligned with Triple Alliance (Germany plus Austria-Hungary) after c. 1881 (IIRC), could depend on their support realistically between 1885 and 1895, after that point much less enthusiastic about going mano a mano against France.

Russia: Aligned with Germany and Austria-Hungary under "benevolent neutrality" until c. 1890, then French alliance, though Russian and Austria could have gone to war without German interference during this entire period, depending on the cause of war. Entente with UK in 1907.

United Kingdom: Signed Mediterranean Agreement in 1887 with Spain, Italy, Austria-Hungary, and Germany to preserve status quo in Mediterranean against France. Overturned this by entente with France in 1904.
