The Election of 1855 was the third quinquennial election of the Second American Republic.
The issues of the day were primarily over whether to abolish the practice of slavery and how to deal with the growing British influence in the bordering nations of Mississippi and Florida.
The winner was elected by a plurality of the popular vote.

Franklin Pierce: 42.3%
Abraham Lincoln: 39.7%
John Breckinridge: 18%

Being the absolute madman that I am, I decided to do a 10% swing to Nixon in 1972. obviously Nixon wins every state and McGovern wins an absolutely negligible number of counties (47) - but he still gets over 70% in Washington DC.

If America had a completely different two-party system
Yellow = libertarian party
Green = socially conservative, economically left-wing party

I'd probably put all the western red states except maybe Utah in the libertarian bracket. They might be a bit racist, but compared to the Deep South they're quite secular and very much of the guns and get-off-my-land mindset. RI with its many traditional Catholics and even VT with its socialist influence are at least swing states...maybe also WV if left wing economics includes environmentalism.

Pierce the anti-slavery candidate and Lincoln the moderate?

Pierce the anti-slavery candidate and Lincoln the moderate?
Pierce seemed to only be pro-slavery because he wanted to keep the Dems united.
ITTL the split happened before his election, so he chose the stronger faction.
IOTL and ITTL Lincoln was a moderate, he wasn't expressly anti-slavery until the Emancipation Proclamation .

The year is 1988. the month is August. the day is Monday. the time is exactly 2:25 PM. the weather is nice and sunny in San Diego. George H.W Bush is campaigning when he suddenly pulls out a gun and shoots a man in the crowd - that man's name? William J. Rutherford. After this, his Democratic opponent, Al Gore, wins in the largest landslide since the uncontested elections of George Washington, winning 70% of the Popular Vote to Bush's 20%, with 10% going to third parties.

The 20% who voted for Reaganvelt's killer should be stripped of their right to vote. WJR was too good for this world.

Don't worry, I'm working on a 2016 scenario where Hillary gets crushed by George Pataki after her sex tape that she made with Rutherford is released.
