NI Conservative - More socially conservative and moderate economically than the mainland party, and indeed is dominated by Catholics and is regarded as 'the cornerstone of the Cornerstone Group'.

NI Labour - Also more socially conservative than it's mainland equivalent, but arguably more left wing economically (though these days I guess you'd say they are comfortably in the mainstream). Is distinctly Protestant.

NI Liberal - Clinging on for dear life in a rather Catholic urban seat that doesn't like the agrarian Tories or the evangelist Socialists.

Independent Scots Nationalist - Yes, Ulster Scots is an actual language that should be on everything

Independent - Actually a Republican Nationalist but let him say that out loud.

I assume this is a 'what if the DUP, UUP, SF and SDLP basically all just die' scenario?

Thanks once again for all the support guys!

The other states which I plan to include the Populist party in are Mississippi, Illinoia, and Georgia. And while I definitely do have some good ideas for Mississippi, right now I'm working on a territorial election map and there is already another state I want to do after that. But you asking me what other states the Populists are in reminds me that I should start making country wide maps to show which states the major parties are in, so you'll probably be seeing some of those maps soon!

Haha, yeah I tend use those types of districts because in the Seventh Party System timeline nonpartisan redistricting is actually the norm, especially when it comes to swing states like Platte, unlike OTL.

Well most of those states you listed are actually going to be pretty sane and levelheaded but if you thought Sequoyah and Kansas were bad wait until you see what sort of ideas I have for Indiana. :p
Is there any way I could possibly convince you to also have the Populists running in Hamilton, Jefferson, Polypotmia or Saratoga? Or maybe somewhere else? It is okay if you don't want to, if you have formulated these states already, or the Populists don't fit into your plans, but I would love it if you could.

Platte has always been a battleground state, caught between the Populists and the Libertarians, the Republicans and Labor, and in terms of excitement this year's election did not disappoint.

Before the last election during 2016, the Populist-Labor coalition held only a tenuous grip on the state of Platte with a meager 5 seat margin in the House and 2 seats in the Senate. However with the rise of the populist right and the Platte Republican party having recently gone through a crisis as party leader Eric Sasse outed several Republicans for their far right views, the Republican party failed to capitalize on any possible gains and instead fell from 25 seats to a pitiful 19, setting a record for the lowest percentage of seats the GOP had gotten in the state since the 1800s. In the GOP's place the right had become filled with not only Libertarians and Constitutionists, but also two new right wing parties, German Heritage and Agrarian Justice.

German Heritage is a fascist party created to "protect the German heritage of Plattians" as well as "offer a third position between Labor and the Republicans." Having won a total of 9 seats in the 2016 election many national pundits began to fear that the fascist fervor of Kansas might have been passed on to its northern neighbor. Agrarian Justice, on the other hand, was a non-nationalistic party which offered a simple solution to the ongoing Second Great Depression, Georgism. Proposing the abolition of all income taxes and corporate taxes and instead instituting a land value tax to pay for corporate welfare to stimulate the economy they managed to capture a significant proportion of the vote share among white collar urbanites, winning a total of 5 seats.

As a result of these two new parties the Populist-Labor coalition was spared from total loss of government, however they were forced to make supply and confidence agreements with both the Black Panthers and the First People's Party to prop their government up, leading to two more years that were even more unstable than the last as the Black Panthers frequently threatened calling a vote of no-confidence unless their radical socialist legislation got passed. As such, the 2018 election became a matter of not whether the right or left would win, but rather who on the right would win.

This kick-started a race to the right among both the Libertarians and the Republicans, with the Libertarians announcing their support of companies "to exercise their religious freedom to refuse jobs to whatever sexual orientations they so please" and the Republicans ditching Eric Sasse in favor of Varadaraj Pai who vowed to deregulate and sell off the state's telecommunications system, power grid, and water supply to encourage a "free and open marketplace." For their part German Heritage announced their plans to replace all public schools in favor of low cost "youth camps" and Agrarian Justice announced a pledge to donate 10% of the government's tax revenue to churches.

In the end the Republicans turned out to be the biggest winner of 2018, skyrocketing up from 19 seats to 40 as both Labor and the Populists took heavy losses. And while the Republicans were still forced to make a coalition with the Libertarians and Constitutionists in order to form a majority, the three parties shared dedication to trickle down economics and privatization made coalition negotiations a walk in the park.

Government:
Republicans - The party of fiscal conservatives and social moderates, they are more right wing on both the social and economic axes in comparison to their New England counterparts, as is typical for Western Republican parties. However under the leadership of Varadaraj Pai the party has become near identical to that of the Libertarians economically with even the water supply being privatized and sold off to Sinclair Industries, a company co-founded by Mr. Pai himself.
Libertarians - A party for increased freedom in both social and business matters, they have derided by many as misogynistic due to their fervent opposition to abortion and women's healthcare. As a result the majority of their support remains based in Platte's Panhandle whose residents resent paying taxes to bureaucrats in Lincoln. However with Platte's recent shift to the right after Labor failed to end the Second Great Depression the party has begun to spread eastwards and their ideas have heavily influenced the state's Republican party.
Constitution - The party for replacing the rule of law with the rule of religion they are also well known for having economic views which are nearly as right wing as that of the Libertarians. In this light, it was not surprising that the party signed on so quickly to the Republican coalition, nor was it so surprising when a new committee for "Religious Harmony" was created with undisclosed powers.

Opposition:
Labor - The main social democratic party of Platte, they are dedicated to helping the urban workers of the state. Being part of a near eternal alliance with the Populists they ruled the state's government from 2010 to 2018 as a result of the Second Great Depression. However as their efforts have provided unsuccessful in solving the crisis they were resounding defeated at the polls as voters decided to give the Republicans another chance.
Populists - The other social democratic party of Platte, they represent the interests of rural farmers and are more socially conservative than Labor. Unlike in other states such as Mississippi or Wisconsin where Labor and the Populists have a non-competition pact in the House the nature of the state's lower legislative chamber makes it possible for the two parties to run in the same electoral district without fear of vote splitting. Instead it is the upper chamber where the two parties have a non-competition agreement in order to maximize their seats under a FPTP system.
German Heritage - A fascist party claiming to protect the "German Heritage" of Plattians the party fell from 9 seats to 4 seats in this election as most of its moderate supporters jumped ship to the Republicans. However the fact that it still drew four seats leaves many worried about the possibility of a fascist resurgence in the future.
Agrarian Justice - Ironically against the interests of agricultural corporations and small farmers, they instead preach a severe perversion of Paine's pamphlet on "Agrarian Justice" which seeks to exploit the state's farming sector for the benefit of urban businesses. As such they have gained a cult following among urban white collar employees who resent paying Platte's over bloated farm bill.
Black Panther party - Lead by the state's longest serving senator, Ernst Williams, the party has continued to dominate among Omaha's small black population which remains firmly opposed to the social conservatism of both left and the right. Famously filing several suits against God, and calling for the institution of a statewide basic income the BPP has remained a thorn in the side of most Plattians.
First People's Party - A party for Native American interests, their support in the state remains based around the Winnebago and Omaha reservations of Platte's northeastern corner.

Social Credit isn't nice at all in @MoralisticCommunist 's timeline, here is what he has said about them:
This situation only grew worse in the 90s with the rebirth of the Social Credit party which combined isolationism and xenophobia with a focus on the working class and infrastructure renewal projects.

Social Credit - A right of center party which mixes beliefs from both the right and left its main platform is a return to isolationism in America. With their signature triple call to end free trade, wars in the Middle East, and all immigration from Latin America they have found a passionate base among dissatisfied white working class voters. Often called the "Democrats of the North" they have been called racists by the leadership of both Republican and Labor parties.

Social Credit - A right-of-center party with major national conservative streaks they have capitalized on Labor's inability to end the Second Great Depression, blaming the stagnation on Labor's support of globalism and immigration. Combined with key endorsements from major right leaning labor unions such as Steelworker Solidarity and Polizia di Chicago the party was able to gain large numbers of seats in previously solid Labor areas. Even though the Social Creds despise the Republican party for their "elitist attitude" the Social Credit party leaders are practical enough to realize that getting into government at all is far better than being stuck in opposition for eternity.

Social Credit - Surging to become the official opposition of Western Connecticut ahead of the Republicans, the party has much to be proud of with their near repeat of Metropotamia. Even in the Senate, Social Credit endorsement from the Cleveland Police Union and the Western Connecticut Trucker's Association helped them double their seats to 12. If current trends continue, Western Connecticut risks becoming another Saratoga, wherein the Labor party was totally eclipsed by the Social Credit's promise of a socially conservative, economically protectionist utopia.

Social Credit is the largest motion of the Conservative party, representing white laborers who believe that immigration brought about the Second Great Depression. A motion which more than doubled its number of seats in the House as a result of this year's election, they are very much on the rise and proclaim themselves to be the future of conservatism in New York.

Chersonesus is another former labor state which has become a victim of the Social Credit movement, having been the first state to have a social credit plurality, and now the first state to have a social credit majority.

While not as much of a Labor stronghold as neighboring Metropotamia, Chersonesus had for most of its first post-Nixon been a Labor safe state, only having once gone to the Republicans in 2004 through a coalition with Constitution and Social Credit as well. Of course this coalition quickly fell apart when the Constitution party and Social Credit had a falling out, leading to an early election in 2005 that saw Labor regain its majority.

However in 2011, two years after the start of the Second Great Depression which caused the state to reach over 30% unemployment, the people demanded a change from Labor, leading to a Social Credit surge that saw them gaining the plurality of the vote, making Chersonesus the first state in which they had ever gained a plurality. After a Social Credit-Republican alliance lead to a reduction of the unemployment to only 8% over the course of four years, largely due to a massive infrastructure bill that put tens of thousands of Chersonesusians to work, people all across the country say that Social Credit was a viable alternative to Labor, a fact which contributed greatly to the Social Credit surge of 2016.

Thus, in 2017 Social Credit was rewarded for their policies with being granted a solid majority in government, making Chersonesus the first state to ever have a Social Credit majority. Without the Republicans shackling them down Social Credit plans to extend their economic policies even further, launching massive corporate taxes on all major business to pay for a "National Dividend" which guarantees a certain percentage of the state's GDP be given to its residents free of charge. Morally, Social Credit has also announced plans to launch a new era of sin taxes, adding over 100% to the prices of everything from alcohol and cigarettes to movie tickets and video games in order to reform society into a Christian utopia. While no one knows if the "Utopian experiment" in Chersonesus will work one thing is for sure, the nation's eyes will be on this small state of 1.7 million.

Government:
Social Credit - A socially conservative but economically left wing party the organization's wacky ideology was once denounced as lunacy by both the left and right who thought that they could never be a formidable force. However through successful marketing to Labor's white working class base, providing them a legitimate alternative which doesn't betray either their hearts or their pockets the party has seen an incredible rise over the past decade. And unlike in Saratoga where Social Credit rules in solely the coalition, the majority that they have won allows them to test run their plans of a true Utopia, though even the party's leaders exercise caution over the experiment's success as federal courts have struck down their initial plans to levy tariffs on other states and create a Chersonesusian currency.

Nationalist Alliance - Made up of both Social Credit and the Democrats the alliance was inspired by Chris Christie's successful nationalist alliance in New Jersey. However unlike that alliance, the Nationalist Alliance of Pennsylvania is far more radicalized, being more akin to the Democratic party of Alabama then that of New Jersey. With their new leader, Pat Santorum, being an outspoken advocate for intelligent design with stated plans to replace all public schools with Christian ones the universities of Pennsylvania have united in opposition and opened a class action law against his government.

Social Credit - Mainly concentrated among the non-Finnish population of Northeastern Wisconsin their ideals of an anti globalist and religious righteous party for the working class has continued to grow with every closed factory and shut down mine.

An alternate European Union in a universe without mass immigration, meaning that almost everywhere here is 98%+ "European" and 80%+ members of a local ethnic group. Why? Thought experiment...I'm also massively assuming that several different economic events that happened in OTL (the current housing crisis, the 2000s recession, and the war on terror) still do, although the European countries and eventually the EU steer non-European, non-Soviet migrants to the Americas, Australia/New Zealand, and Turkey/the former Yugoslavia depending on origin. There are different issues, though; the age-dependency ratio is much worse in general, a much larger percentage of the budget is spent on border security and resettlement, and each capital as well as select other cities (as determined by the European Parliament in consultation with national governments) get "extra" MEPs (elected via instant runoff) as a result of their economic or cultural significance.. A more detailed writeup is found here, but for short I have the parties below: (darker colors = stronger support)

Brown and beige: Orthodox Communists. No austerity is the best austerity, and we'll keep our pensions and universal healthcare system even if we have to hold the Earth ransom with nukes! Very popular among frustrated urban working classes as well as in countries burned by bankers (the Greek islands, Iceland) and, interestingly, Basques.

Turquoise: GUE-NGL. Left wing, but not Full Communists. Secondary areas in Finland, Southern Italy, Wales, Dublin, the Russian community in Tallinn, and Northern Irish Catholics.

Pink and red: S&D. Social democrats; still hanging on in Sweden and rural in Denmark in spite of welfare cuts, but their great bases are the British industrial cities, Malta, Portugal (especially Alentejo), rural areas of the former Czechoslovakia (KSCM and SMER in OTL), and the ghettos of Bucharest and Sofia.

Green: Greens-EFA. Two major forces drive them: minority interests (Scotland, Germanophone Belgium, Barcelona, Russians in Latvia and to a much lesser extent Lithuania) and environmentalism (Copenhagen, rural Norway).

Yellow: ALDE. Many major urban areas as well as Åland and famously liberal Estonia vote ALDE.

Blue: EPP. The voice of the centre-right. Very popular in Central Europe, especially in Western Poland, Prague, and rural Austria.

Dark blue: AECR. A mixture of conservative farmers, affluent London commuters, and deeply conservative/nationalistic Eastern Europeans are their base.

Black and gray: No Surrender! Impossible to place on the left-right spectrum, they variously identify as "progressive centrist" or "conservative" and yet have an economic and welfare policy as uncompromising as that of the Orthodox Communists. Northern Italy, especially industrial and post industrial areas, and Wallonie are their strongest areas, but they're rapidly expanding to ethnic Latvians, the collieries of Northern England, parts of France, the inner city of Strasbourg and Naples, and rural Greece. Although it doesn't show on the map, they're making inroads in Sweden and Denmark too because of the feeling that the central government is not being assertive enough towards the welfare state. Don't call them socialist or a fascist unless you want to get glassed.

The Ghost of James Polk, Butterfly Killer (a cross post).

In a US without the Mexican-American wars, the 1980 presidential election was implausibly similar. President Jimmy Carter of Georgia would be defeated in his re-election bib by Senate Minority Leader Howard Baker, in a landslide in both the popular and electoral vote. Senator Baker would be the first republican to win Arkansas, Mississippi, Alabama, South Carolina and North Carolina, in a sign of the realignment to come. His victory would propel republicans to 48 out of the 86 senate seats, and 199 out of the 389 house seats, narrow majorities of both houses. Baker would end up serving two terms, and would become widely known as one of the greatest presidents.

Why is Oklahoma not part of the US? It was part of the US prior to the Mexican American wars....

Election of 2056

Screen Shot 2017-11-30 at 7.47.05 PM.png

Democratic Party - After Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT) clinched the Democratic nomination in 2020, he and his supporters began transforming the party into one based on left-wing populist ideals. The party rid itself of "corporate influences" and most notably pushed for greatly increased taxes on the wealthy, tuition-free four-year college, and single-payer health care. The shift to the left led to more moderate Democrats to defect. The party is most popular on the East and West Coasts, the Midwest, New Mexico, and Hawaii.

Liberal Party - As the Democratic Party moved to the left and the Republican Party essentially split due to internal conflicts following the 2028 presidential election, moderates from both parties created the Liberal Party, which would follow the example of European liberal parties. The party commits to fiscal conservatism, social liberalism, and environmentalism. While its members are generally in favor of free trade, some candidates, mainly those in the Rust Belt, emphasize the need for "fair trade." The party is most popular in New England and Alaska.

Constitution Party - After the Republican Party split, social conservatives found a home in the Constitution Party, a third party dedicated to protecting "the Judeo-Christian values that America was founded upon." The party welcomed ex-Republicans with open arms and allowed for them to essentially co-lead the party. The party is most popular in areas of the South and states west of the Mississippi River but east of California.

1988 from the fantastic timeline The Biden Express by @Whanztastic

Very cool map, but I have a minor qualm with it - I think Biden should be doing much better in rural Texas and Oklahoma, considering Dukakis won many counties in these areas handily and he was certainly a poorer fit for rural Southern whites than Biden would be. Also, is it just me or is Biden doing ridiculously well in Illinois here? that looks like a double digit victory to me.

I was able to gerrymander an Oklahoma where 2/10 seats lean Democrat. Insanely hard though...shows how much FPTP that's geographically based screws over the urban population.
NUk1A0b.png

And an attempt to create an electoral system that will screw over rural areas. Since even proportional-representation countries (like the Netherlands) tend to have more municipal governments per capita in rural areas, I tried to create a system (a blend of Jacksonville + Mainland Chinese city-regions) that would concentrate power in major cities and college towns. Notice that Greater Cheyenne and Greater Laramie are split into nine municipalities, while most small towns no longer have any local government, and the combination of a youth-favoring electoral system plus a paucity of local elected offices in rural areas means that even with proportional representation, the most dependable voters tend to be urban/suburban hipsters and college kids. In most cases, the Seat is the equivalent to the county courthouse and is located in the namesake city of each Metropolis. Good luck registering to vote if you live in Buffalo, Gillette, Wyoming. Sad!
