alternate dualism

what if Austrian empire makes "ausgleich" sooner, but with other part being Italian lands instead of Hungarian ones?

The best option I can see is either the Ottoman or Russian Empire are at war with Austria between 1700 and 1800, with the Hungarian Kingdom being transfered to them.

The Hasburg family turns their army towards the Italian Peninsula.

If we're talking about a post Napoleonic POD, that simply wouldn't work. The only other ethnic group that was populous enough to make an alternate dualism were the Southern Slavs.

Jonathan certain offers something though, and I cannot recall seeing many working around a Habsburg dominated Italy without Hungary.

I think Hungary was the main basket, the Habsurg's placed all their eggs :( not thinking one day their empire would crack.

So the P.O.D would be 1699 resulting in Austria losing lands in Hungary and the Balkans.
The Kingdom of Hungary in 1700 became the Hungarian Khanate.
Joseph I, Holy Roman Emperor died in 1701 (some say he was killed for losing the war) and is succeeded by his brother Charles as Charles VI, Holy Roman Emperor.
Charles is only 25 and unmarried. With his Eastern Empire gone, Emperor Charles VI looks to his western holds in northern Italy. He proposes two marriages:
1st to Maria Luisa of Savoy
2nd to Elisabeth Farnese of Parma

Could this be an interesting TL as either of these two would give Charles an heir meaning no War of Austrian Succession and could lead to the Ottoman empire having a revolution in 1848 :D
