Alternate Confederate President, where does Davis go?

Why won't anyone just SAY what's on everyone's minds? A.S. Johnston, AND his Generals (Except Forrest, of course) were the 2nd squad. The Varsity were all in Virginia. For the Union? For the most part, vice-versa.:p

Not all the 1st team generals were in Virginia.

William J. Hardee was about as good a divisional commander as you could ever hope to find and was arguably one of the greatest Corps Commanders of the war. Bit too by-the-book to ever make it as an army commander but there were few better than him at Corps or Divisional level.

Patrick Ronayne Cleburne was the greatest divisional commander of the Army of Tennessee, his division was arguably the finest of either side during the war. To all reports he seemed to have the ability to make a very good Corps commander but politics kept him down.

John C. Breckenridge didn't excell at divisional or Corps command but he was certainly better than average. He had successes in every theater of the war he fought in and didn't deserve the besmirching of his name by Bragg after Chattanooga.

Nathan Bedford Forrest was just aout the best independent cavalry commander and raider alive in the 1860's, John Hunt Morgan was himself an excellent raider and a passable Army-Cavalryman (meaning cavalryman who works well with infantry and artillery), John A. Wharton was the best Army-Cavalryman the Confederacy had with the possible exception of J.E.B Stuart and when he tried his hand at it Van Dorn proved a good independent cavalryman.

John S. Bowen was, by all accounts, one of the best brigade commanders of the war and did a good job in divisional command during the short time he go to do it.

Benjamin Cheatham and Alexander P. Stewart both proved good brigade and divisional commanders and passable Corps Commanders.

And further down there were good general waiting in the wings to get the chance (like Thomas Benton Smith). There were the capabilities of the Confederacy to build new commanders from the ranks but far too often Davis just picked someone from the existing higherarchy.
