It could be useful to create various lists of alternate heads of government and heads of state for various countries.

I want to gather various potential alternate chancellors of Germany during the 20. century.

Which persons could have been chancellor?
Under which alternate circumstances could they gain power (alternate election results or alternate coalition agreements or conflicts inside various parties) ?
How would they change Germany and German politics?

Lothar Späth the Minister-President of Baden-Wurttemberg planned to launch a coup to overthrow Kohl as CDU chairman and Chancellor in 1989 (and had significant support to do so) but in the end backed down, a few months later reunification happened, Kohl's popularity soared and he clung onto power for another decade.

For some time I wondered how Norbert Blüm could become chancellor replacing Kohl. Norbert Blüm basically was from the left wing of the CDU (probably far to leftist for many party members)

Well, the obvious one is Rainer Barzel. Missed the Chancellorship by a margin of two votes in Bundestag which may or may not have been bought by Stasi, then just faded into obscurity.
