Alternate Cause of the Crimean War

The monasteries business was just a handy cover for power-play anyway, but really, the Crimean War was fought because of a long series of misunderstandings, misconstructions, and ruses from all sides plus lots of unfortunate flukes. It was about so little in real terms (the Coalition had achieved their original objectives before they began and then came up with new ones) that one might truly say it caused itself.

Do you mean just a Russo-Turkish War that takes place in the mid-19th century? Because Russo-Turkish Wars used occur at the drop of the hat so thinking of a casus belli should be relatively easy. If you want other European nations to intervene then just bring up the age old concern Britain and to a lesser extent France had regarding Russian control of the straits.

Sorry a direct idea for a spark to ignite a war isn't coming to me right now. So really I'm no help at all.

Yes, we all know that religion issue wasn't the actual reason for war, but that was the guise is was fought under. I guess I should ask what non-religious guise could it be fought under?
