Alternate Astronauts?

Suppose that NASA doesn't go ahead with Shuttle, but instead keeps going on with Apollo through the '70s, so there's no capability gap, and NASA keeps needing astronauts. At the same time, a lot of the old guys will still leave the program, whether because they just want to go do something else, because they really are getting too old for it, or because flying around the Earth in a tin can is just not appealing after going to the Moon (or whatnot). So, NASA is going to keep needing to hire astronauts through the '70s. Who would they have hired? I'm particularly interested in female or minority candidates, as I suspect the all-white-male NASA is going to start looking rather funny pretty quickly. Robert Lawerence would be an obvious candidate, but he was a little dead.

The candidates would be recruited pretty much as they were for the shuttle program. Military commanders would be integrated with civilians.

Well, yes. But WHO would have gotten the nod? Surely some of the Thirty-Five New Guys wouldn't have been hired because they weren't old enough or were busy doing something else.

I think Jeri Cobb would make a good candidate- she was tested to see if women would make good astronauts. This was back in the 60's so she couldn't go....then
