Alternate American Colonies

Just a wondering.

What were some alternative possible American colonies other than the Philippines? And by colonies, I mean outright colony, not just economic domination ala Central America.

Not sure how true it is, but I read once that Morocco considered to become a US protectorate if that keep it away of the from the colonial ambitions of Spain, France, Germany and Britain. That would be around the time of the Algeciras Conference (1906).

The Americans were interested in Fiji and New Zealand for a time before the war between the states. An interesting possibility, I think, would be Madagascar.

Really you're looking at the Pacific and Caribbean, maybe some interest in Greenland/Iceland? Perhaps an interventionist President looks to make Liberia a full blown protectorate and ship more freemen there post-ACW? With a more populous Liberia you get greater conflict with the natives (Liberia was heavily segregated between African-American immigrants and the natives) and expansion of the territory?

The Dominican Republic asked for annexation from President Grant and he was keen but Congress shot it down. Haiti was also considered as a dumping ground for ex-slaves as a US protectorate.

Perhaps an early American-Japanese war leads to the US freeing Korea (with Jeju Island taken as a naval base) and taking Taiwan as a 'forward base' to influence China?

Cuba is the perennial big target but I'd say an early Spanish-American War would be needed, perhaps an effort to placate the South with a wealthy slaver colony in the 1850s?

Maybe the Mexican War or an ATL 2nd Mexican War leads to the Americans taking ports like Veracruz in a similar manner to Hong Kong to keep influence over Mexico? How about the Dutch sell Curacao and Suriname?

EDIT: Wow. Sorry half asleep didn't mean to commit such a heinous necromancy
