Alternate 2000: McCain veep selection?

Reading the comments, I'm becoming more convinced that he'd probably go with Ashcroft. Although Frist might be an equally strong pick that I just didn't consider.

I don't think he'd pick Huck who, ITTL, hasn't really made a name for himself yet as the former fat governor.

If he's set a woman and is convinced that Dole isn't a good option for whatever reason, McCain might pick Governor Whitman of New Jersey. Although, that's a pick that will not going to cover the "fence-mending" qualification.

And, yeah, I mentioned Condi as more or less a joke. She would be on a list for obvious reasons, but she'd be cut pretty early on in the process, but she's probably going to get a position within the administration somewhere.

Ashcroft was a pretty polarizing figure in 2000 (probably on the level of Santorum today); there's a reason he lost that year's Senate race to a dead guy, after all.

Now, that may be what you're going for, but for my money, the best sops-to-the-far-right are the ones that you can also try and sell to the middle.

Nobodies mentioned one of the few people McCain said he might pick in OTL: Governor George Allen (R-VA). He had a very successful tenure as Governor of a state that hadn't had a Republican governor in recent memory, is a very inteligent speaker, and had a number of pet causes that McCain supported, improving education and veterans lot among them. People tend to forget that before 2006, he was considered one of the GOP golden boys, and a near sho-in for 2008.
