alternate 2000 election

My premise here is that McCain is the nominee instead of Bush. This leads to a greater third party turnout on both sides. Buchanan gets more votes because of social cons disgruntled with McCain as the nominee and many on the left are less scared of McCain then they were of Bush so there is a much higher percentage of Nader voters which leads to the Green Party getting the 5% of the popular vote that they wanted to get on the ballot for the next election cycle. Obviously Nader would still be hated by Democrats because they would blame him for losing the election but you'd have a more competitive Green Party in this timeline for liberals to retreat to if the Democrats compromised too much.

That's ok. Personally I can't see Nader winning in states. In OTL, Nader got 5% of the vote in Oregon to Gore's 47%. He would basically have to take all of Gore's support in the state, which is border-line ASB. Even then, the split of the left would cause Bush to take the state.

In an interesting scenario would be having Donald Trump or Jesse Ventura beating Buchanan in the primaries to provide a stronger reform party challenger.
