The War in Europe changed in 1943. Hitler's death in a plane explosion in 1942 had been the first in a series of actions which had seen the Nazi's toppled from power. Many of the top Nazi leaders had been killed in either "accidents" or the Coup that had followed Hitler's death. Heydrich had died at the hands of the Czechs, Himmler Gobbles and Borman at the hands of a military tribunal for crimes against Humanity. The new Military Government had selected General Beck as the Provisional President although there was talk of restoring the Monarch. The death Camps were all to be closed. The International Red Cross was brough in to help try to save all those that were still in the camps..
The new government knew that the situtation would only get worse. North Africa was a stalemate but the odds would only get worse. The Germans sent peace feelers through the Swedish and Irish Governments to the Western allies,The reality was Germany did not have the resources to fight a two front war. Already new orders had gone out to pull back from the gains made in Operation Blue. Stalingrad was to be withdrawn from. Field Marshal Mainstein had been given charge of saving the situtation there.
Rommel on home on sick leave was recalled to Berlin for a serious conversation regarding North Africa.
The question was would the western allies make peace and how much would Germany be willing to give up to get it. It was a given that Germany would give back all of occuppied France as well as Belgium and the Netherlands, Denmark and Norway also. Poland and the Czech provinces were also likely to be given back as a move back toward Germany's borders post Munich. The Germans were determined to retain Danzig but were willing to talk about Polish access to the Baltic.
The Balkans were a drain on Germany and Greece, Albania and even Yugoslavia would have to go. True the blow against Tito had be a success. His death and the heavy loses by the Partisans would allow the Royalist forces to once again be the main resistance group to the Axis.
If Russia could be dealt with then perhaps there might be an agreement. the Baltic States would once again be free but how peace talks would go would depend upon flexibility on both Germany and the allies.
