Alt. World History (POD 1940)

THE MIDDLE EASTERN STRUGGLES

In 1967, due to mass rebelions and political strife, the Ottoman Empire finnaly split into 4 nations: The Turkish Peoples Union, the Socialist Republic of Arabia, the United Iraqi Socialist Republic, and the Republic of Syria. Being the only country not to turn to communism from this split, Syria found itself under ton's of pressure. It couldn't relinquish its burden by attacking Israel, due to it's close proximity to the British-Controled Commonwealth of Egypt, and attacking its new neighbors would not be smart; after all, it was the smallest of the new nations, and even if it did, it might bring the wrath of Greece and Russia on it. Even so, it needed more recorces, as most of the nation was desert. However, it decieded to take the chance for 2 reasons; 1, it needed to show it was not defenseless, and 2, oil was discovered on its once-useless desert, and the other nations were sure to take action. So, on January 9th, 1968, barely a year after it's birth, Syria declared war on Iraq after some "border conflicts". Soon, Turkey and Arabia declared war, and the only ally Syria found was an aqward one, its long-time rival Israel. Syria soon began to engage all out guerilla war, attempting to get Iraq to turn on itself. However, this soon began to look like a unwinnable war. Israel was to busy keeping its new possesions in Arabia in check to help Syria, and Britain still refused to take sides until Russia had. However, when Iraq "accidentaly" killed 56 Iranians when they had tried to fly over Baghdad, Syria soon found a very powerful ally indeed. In fact, Iran pressured Iraq so much that Syria had regained lost land and more, as Turkey backed out of the war on August 4th. Eventually, when Iraq surrendered March 7th, 1969, only Arabia was left to contend with Syria and Israel. Soon, however, the fighting reached a stalemate, as neither force could oust the other, and when they did, the other force would just come and fight until it was theirs again. Eventually, on May 19th, 1969, Arabia, Israel, Syria, and Iran signed a peace treaty, which simply gave the "winning" army's the land's they had captured, as each force was tired of fighting a seemingly endless war.

For the Ottoman Empire to still be around in 1940s and after, you need a POD before World War I. IOTL, the Ottoman Empire broke up by 1923, after which the Republic of Turkey was founded. The Arab lands had become mandates of the British and French. How is Greece controlling Thrace? Did they win the Turkish War of Independence?

K, sorry, don't really know much about Ottoman history. And wait, isn't Thrace in the Balkans?

yes, Thrace is in the Balkans: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Thrace_modern_state_boundaries.png

OTL Turkish Thrace appears to be Greek-controlled on your map. IOTL, it was given to Greece (along with a small piece of Anatolia) after World War I, but the Greeks got greedy and tried to push for even more land, in a campaign where they were soundly defeated by the armies of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk in what came to be known as the Turkish War of Independence.

Oh, my bad. In my timeline, the Ottomans, though weak, obviously lasted to the 60's. Since both Turkey and Greece are Communist in TTL, it seems kinda pointless. Besides, i might have a Balkan war comeing up, so....

THE 2ND ASIAN WAR

The 1st Asian War was a disaster for the Soviet Union. Not only did they lose their eastern posesions, but their Chinese buffer folded like paper, and Britain had brickwalled their southern expansion. Also, if they looked to the west, all they would do, they believed, would get stuck in one of the many backwards nations while Scandinavia, France, Britain, and America simply pick them off. So, on October 5th, 1973, Soviet forces succesfully took control of what was left of China, and from its new puppet state, moved against the peaceful Tibet. The rest of the world felt many things when they heard this: shock, disgust, sorrow. But the one universal response was rage. Britain and Japan moved into Tibet, and soon America also joined, attacking Greater Siberia. Iran eventually got involved when they forcfully moved through the Caucasus mountains and also into Afganistan. However, this war was far from the one-sided affair from 20 years earlier. Russian troops were only able to penetrate the northern part of Tibet, as Britain and Japanese troops had taken peaceful residence in and around Lhasa at the Dalai Lama's invitation. In the west, Iran had succesfully controll of Azerbaijan, Yerevan, and Georgia, although they were having trouble in Afganistan due to the terain. The American's, on the other hand, were making great progress, as they simply moved west across the plains, made peaceful relations with the local's, and simply wiped all the Soviets from their path. The war dragged on until the Americans took the Soviet city of Krasnoyarsk. Then it became apparent that Russia couldn't just sit in Tibet and wait for Britain and Japan to surrender. They immedietly pulled out of Tibet, and ceased the war against Britain, Iran, and Japan on December 19th, 1979. They then swarmed into Siberia, and on Cristmas Eve's Eve, the 23rd, they surrounded Krasnoyarsk in what the New York Times called "The Cristmas Seige". This attack lasted until January 11th, 1980, when the Soviet and American CO's met discuse peace terms. America would keep a part of Siberia if Russia gave Afganistan and the Caucasus Nations to Iran, the puppet state of China to Japan, and Mongolia would gain it's freedom.
These terms were agreed to, and 2 days later American forces withdrew from "Krasmas Town" as the American forces called it.

END OF COMMUNISM

By the time January 1991 rolled around, thing's were looking bad for the USSR both politically, socially, and militaristicly. The democratic Balkan nations had talked their way into taking more land near the Black Sea, and Britain and Iran had forced their way into Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan. The Socialist leaders knew if they didn't take a desisive area, they would be overthrown. However, there was nowhere to turn, so on May 2nd of 1991, the Soviet party was overthrown and in its place was put the Russian Democratic Federation. They withdrew from almost every nation they had taken exept for Kazakhstan and Ukrain, and on June 19th, 1991, the Balkan Peoples Socialist Union followed suit and united with the Balkan Republic, and the Eastern Balkan Republic was renamed the Romanian Democratic Republic. By the end of 1992, the only Communist nations left were the CASR, the Turkish Peoples Union, and the Socialist Republic of Arabia. In January of 1993, what remained of Iraq was ceceded (sp?) to Iran. Also, on Febuary 15th, 1994, the Nazi government that for so long had been clinging to life was overthrown with the help of America, Scandinavia, France, and Britain. The lands that were kept from them were given back, and one week later the Republic of Austria was formed. However, before the world could celebrate, Serbian rebels took the city of Belgrade with local support. For the next month, the world tried to keep this fragile peace, and on March 19th, the Republic of Serbia was formed.

The Chinese, infuriated that the U.S. would ally itself with their rivals, they declared themselfs an Axis faction. With backing from the U.S. Marine Corps, Japan swiftly swept through China, and on December 23, 1943, 4 days after the Battle of Beijing, the Chinese formally surrendered.
I'm not going to comment on the rest of the TL, just mention one detail: Japan captured Beijing (then called Beiping, and incidentally not the Chinese capital) in 1937, three years before your POD.

Like others I consider that a first ATL deserves to be cut some slack when mistakes are made, but best to read up on WW2 history if you're going to write about it.
