THE MIDDLE EASTERN STRUGGLES
In 1967, due to mass rebelions and political strife, the Ottoman Empire finnaly split into 4 nations: The Turkish Peoples Union, the Socialist Republic of Arabia, the United Iraqi Socialist Republic, and the Republic of Syria. Being the only country not to turn to communism from this split, Syria found itself under ton's of pressure. It couldn't relinquish its burden by attacking Israel, due to it's close proximity to the British-Controled Commonwealth of Egypt, and attacking its new neighbors would not be smart; after all, it was the smallest of the new nations, and even if it did, it might bring the wrath of Greece and Russia on it. Even so, it needed more recorces, as most of the nation was desert. However, it decieded to take the chance for 2 reasons; 1, it needed to show it was not defenseless, and 2, oil was discovered on its once-useless desert, and the other nations were sure to take action. So, on January 9th, 1968, barely a year after it's birth, Syria declared war on Iraq after some "border conflicts". Soon, Turkey and Arabia declared war, and the only ally Syria found was an aqward one, its long-time rival Israel. Syria soon began to engage all out guerilla war, attempting to get Iraq to turn on itself. However, this soon began to look like a unwinnable war. Israel was to busy keeping its new possesions in Arabia in check to help Syria, and Britain still refused to take sides until Russia had. However, when Iraq "accidentaly" killed 56 Iranians when they had tried to fly over Baghdad, Syria soon found a very powerful ally indeed. In fact, Iran pressured Iraq so much that Syria had regained lost land and more, as Turkey backed out of the war on August 4th. Eventually, when Iraq surrendered March 7th, 1969, only Arabia was left to contend with Syria and Israel. Soon, however, the fighting reached a stalemate, as neither force could oust the other, and when they did, the other force would just come and fight until it was theirs again. Eventually, on May 19th, 1969, Arabia, Israel, Syria, and Iran signed a peace treaty, which simply gave the "winning" army's the land's they had captured, as each force was tired of fighting a seemingly endless war.
