In OTL several major world religions became so because the right individual was converted, namely the ruler of a large empire. The two main examples of this I can think of are Christianity and Buddhism.
Christianity got its big break when the Roman Emperor Constantine converted to Christianity, and Buddhism got a similar break when the Mauryan Emperor Asoka was converted to Buddhism. Both religions had already carved out niches for themselves prior to this, but they only really hit the big leagues once these key figures were converted and spread the religion through their respective empires.
I was curious which other religions might have had similar opportunities in the past, but missed them for whatever reason? Are they any POD's out there that would elevate a minor religion (in OTL) into a major world religion?
