So, there have been a fair few threads on Alphonso, Earl of Chester (b. 1273: d. 1284) third born son of Edward I and Eleanor of Castile. What little we know of him shows that he had his own household, including a Spanish cook, he was born in Gascony, and he died at Windsor. He was also betrothed to Margaret of Holland in 1281 and was meant to marry her before he died.
In my idea, I am considering a few scenarios, the first obviously being that Alphonso does not die in 1284, now this leads me to an interesting quandry his father initially supported Floris, Count of Holland over the Count of Flanders, but due to conflicting interests switched sides, if Edward still switches sides here, does that mean the betrothal to Margaret is off, if so who does Alphonso marry instead? If Edward remains an ally of Floris, when would a marriage to Margaret take place?
Secondly, with a POD in 1284, that could well change things in Scotland, my question for you guys is this, is it more interesting to have Alexander III's eldest son Alexander survive and have children, or for him to die and for Margaret the Maid of Norway become Queen of Scotland? If the latter, would she marry otl Edward II here, or someone else? Or is it more interesting for Margaret to die as OTL, and for the war of succession in Scotland to kick off?
Thirdly, I'm planning on having Edward I die during the Welsh campaign of 1294-95, what consequences would his death have on that campaign?
Your thoughts are most welcome.
