Metaxas was alert of the italian and German danger a lot before it became apparent to the rest of the world. His journal and other evidence (what he said to other people) proves this. Evidence are also the defenses he created in the north borders though they where also related to fear of a bulgarian attack. (a bulgarian attack that did also come then)
Even if Metaxas was not the ally of Britain because he had to , operation Marita and the invasion of Yugoslavia was already under way after the Italian defeat and there was nothing he could do , the Germans would occupy at the very least northern if not all Greece. That was to protect the German flank from a British attack , while operation Barbarossa is underway. What kind of deal with Metaxas would ensure that the British would not intervene is impossible for us to imagine , because the British could intervene whether Metaxas wanted to or not. Though Metaxas did want the British to assist him , if they could , as it proved by all available evidence.

As for him being unwilling to accept British presence in Greece , i am not even sure if that was completely correct , or if we are drawing conclusions from extraordinary circumstances.
Maybe he wanted more British presence than the one the British where willing to give.
An other myth is that Mussolini attacked Greece at 1940 without the Germans knowing about it. The Germans stopped Mussolini from attacking Yugoslavia but they didn;t say no to an attack of Greece.
maybe they would have rathered for it to be a German invasion , for them to coordinate it , or for Mussolini to handle it better than he did , but he didn't get a no reply from them , as he did when he asked about the invasion of Yugoslavia.
his error but the Germans are not without any responsibility for the strategic ramifications of the italian defeat.
But thankfully defeated they were.
