Op HUSKY, as the invasion of Sicily in July 1943, was a very near-run battle for the British & Americans, which included the sad fact of substantial friendly fire casualties sustained by the 82nd Airborne Div when their C47s passing over the invasion fleet were fired upon by jumpy AA gunners- resulting in serious losses of men & aircraft. Now, could the allies have from then on decided that such airborne drops weren't worth the risk, a la Hitler after Crete, & no longer use parachute troops ?
