Cause he wants to go back to the senate
Edit: I misread the original quote. Maybe he thinks that the Johnson Administration is doomed and he doesn't want to go down with the ship. That makes literally no sense. Why would Humphrey, the heir apparent to the Democratic Establishment, leave his high profile position to go back to a thankless job?
He would be mocked for arguably making such a stupid decision.
A VP running in a primary challenge against his own President is a very, very bad look.
Edited the post. I misread the post about Humphrey--I thought he had ruled out a run for President, not as Vice President. Then just don't run in the primary! Why would he go to the Senate?
Care to elaborate? Maybe we can fix some stuff.None of this makes any sense.
Why don't you post that happening?I have a sneaking suspicion who the apparent sockpuppet was, but ignoring their contributions, maybe LBJ can get South Vietnam to actually negotiate for peace before Election Day ITTL. That would certainly be a massive shot in the arm for his campaign.
April 21st 1968: A leaked source from the white house has stated that LBJ and HHH had been drifting apart socially since LBJ had announced his intension to run in the 1968 election. There are speculation that LBJ is looking for a new running mate with influence in the Northern part of the Democratic Party and Northern region on the whole.April 20th 1968-In a bombshell report Vice President Humphrey says he will not run for Vice President in 1968.

April 23rd, 1968: Remembering how JFK and him managed to nab a reasonable mix of Northern and Southern states, LBJ reluctantly picks Robert F. Kennedy as his running mate. Kennedy himself reluctantly agrees, noting it's his only way of reaching the White House.
Like Humphrey? There are speculation that LBJ is looking for a new running mate with influence in the Northern part of the Democratic Party and Northern region on the whole.
True, but he wanted to get to the White House somehow, just like Johnson. Besides, he'd acknowledge that their chances would be better together than apart.Kennedy would never agree to become LBJ's running mate, he absolutely loathed the man.
They always had a weird relationship and you didn't rectify the post.Like Humphrey?
There's no reason for the two to grow apart, especially with how much Humphrey stuck by LBJ to his detriment IOTL.
